Our tale begins in the fall of 2013, where the author, a bright-eyed freshman at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, yearned to make a mark in the world of collegiate golf. It was during this time that they first heard about the Cougar Classic, an exhilarating tournament held at the illustrious Yeamans Hall.

But alas, despite the burning desire and determination, the 2013 qualifier was not in the cards. While the author watched friends and teammates regale stories of their excitement and challenges on the course, they narrated tales filled with impressions of wide fairways, undulating greens, and breathtaking water views. These stories left a mark on the author, igniting a spark that would lead them to new heights.

Rise to the Challenge

Fueled by the tales of their teammates, the author devoted themselves to honing their skills over the next year. In 2014, they returned with a vengeance and, to their joy, qualified for the Cougar Classic! Walking onto the course, they could hardly contain their excitement, but nothing could prepare them for the magical atmosphere where even a bagpiper playing amidst the morning fog welcomed competitors on the first hole.

Ten Years Later

Fast forward to October 2024, the author found themselves once again at Yeamans Hall. This return sparked countless memories and reflections on nearly a decade of growth, both personally and as a golfer. The course has remained unchanged in its challenging beauty, with features designed to test the skill of even the most seasoned player.

The cross bunkers, elevated greens, and those iconic par-3 holes kept the author on their toes. Every stroke required precision and strategy, especially when tackling the elevated greens that could easily send a ball rolling into collection areas or deep bunkers. Certainly, two-putt pars were treasured accomplishments on the large, undulating greens!

Nature’s Splendor

The was more than just the game, though. As the author made their way through the course, they found that the breathtaking scenery added a layer of enjoyment. The views of the shimmering water and the graceful Spanish Moss hanging from the branches created a sensory experience unlike any other.

The Refreshing Break

canned Gatorade and Nekot crackers provided the necessary fuel for the latter half of the round. Rehydrated and replenished, the author confidently returned to tackle the remaining holes.
