As winter settles in along the Grand Strand, golfers are seeing a wave of improvements at local courses, and it’s not just about the new year; it’s about new playing experiences! Several golf courses on the north end of the Strand are rolling up their sleeves for some much-needed renovations and upgrades. Whether you’ve been a regular at these courses or looking to tee off for the first time, there’s plenty to look forward to in the coming months.
Located in Shallotte, Rivers Edge Golf Club is making strides with significant renovations, especially on its back nine. Head Professional Dan Miller reveals that although the back nine is currently closed, it’s on track to reopen by the end of December. Some holes might even be available as early as next week! The team is hard at work repairing and restoring wooden bulkheads on critical holes like 9, 15, and 18. Notably, the par-3 15th hole is having its artificial mats swapped out for natural grass, promising a more authentic golfing experience.
The much-loved par-5 ninth hole will see a little TLC after the reopening of the back nine, with plans to replace its bulkheads as well. In the meantime, golfers can enjoy playing the front nine twice at a discounted rate. Miller is optimistic that they might be able to keep 16 holes open during the ongoing work on the 9th and 15th holes, which is good news for golf enthusiasts eager to play in the spring!
Meanwhile, at the Sea Trail Golf Resort, the Maples Course is closed for winter renovations as part of a multi-million dollar upgrade. Changes include removing some trees and enhancing playability through overseeding of tees and fairways. This should have the course in tip-top shape just in time for spring. The Maples Course is expected to make a grand return shortly after New Year’s Eve.
In addition to these improvements, the course is tentatively scheduled for further renovations next summer, where greens will transition from bentgrass to ultradwarf Bermudagrass. Sea Trail has also spruced up its clubhouse and dining facilities within the past year, ensuring that visitors have an enriching experience on and off the course.
Over at Tidewater Golf Club, the maintenance crew is knee-deep in a major bunker renovation project that aims to reshape and modernize the course’s look. Seven holes have completed renovations thus far, and the course remains open for play during this process. Tidewater’s general manager, Chris Cooper, comments that the updates not only improve functionality but also enhance the course’s overall aesthetic appeal.
As about one-third of the course’s bunkers are set to be removed or reduced, golfers can expect a more visually appealing landscape. Cooper assures that these enhanced features will make the course even more exciting and enjoyable to play.
Don’t forget about the International Club of Myrtle Beach, which recently debuted its new dining venue, The Venue. With craft cocktails, local brews, and delicious food options, it’s a perfect spot to unwind after a day on the greens. Following a major clubhouse renovation, this addition offers an inviting atmosphere for club members and guests alike.
So, whether you’re a golf fanatic or just enjoy the beauty of a well-kept course, now’s the time to visit the Grand Strand’s golf hotspots. With these renovations underway, players are in for a treat as these courses prepare to dazzle in the coming months!
