After play wraps up on May 23, the course will close its doors for several months, with plans to reopen on September 1. Get ready for a brand-new golfing experience when the popular greens make their return!
So, what can we expect from this extensive renovation? Hold on to your golf clubs because it includes a whole lot of upgrades! First off, expect new greens, tees, and fairways that promise to enhance the playing surface. The greens will be regrassed with the state-of-the-art Sunday ultradwarf Bermudagrass, which is known for its superior playability, while the tees and fairways will feature Bimini Bermuda. This newer variety is gaining traction for its drought-tolerant and durable nature, making it a fantastic choice for the climate around the Grand Strand.
The decision to use Bimini Bermuda was carefully made after observing its impressive growth at a turf farm in Camden, South Carolina. The success experienced with this variety at other golf courses adds further confidence, promising that Whispering Pines will be in top shape post-renovation.
As part of the renovation, many of the course’s aged fairways will be leveled and smoothed to provide a more enjoyable golfing experience. A few hundred trees will be removed to optimize light and airflow around the greens – with approximately 150 trees already taken down. This move is all about creating a better environment for both the greens and fairways.
In addition to the greens and fairways, the course’s bunkers will also see renovations – new drainage systems and fresh sand will be added, completing a full renovation that has been in the works for some time. And let’s not forget about the parking lot, which will also get a much-needed upgrade.
This ambitious renovation is part of a broader plan approved by the city on October 22, representing the third phase of improvements for Whispering Pines. The city has set aside $1.5 million for the renovations, and the management has vowed to cover any potential cost overruns, ensuring the project stays on track.
Whispering Pines has come a long way since its transition to new management in 2014. Remarkably, the course has generated profits each year since 2015, a stark contrast to its previous operation that faced losses. Recent stats show that in the 2023-24 fiscal year alone, the course hosted about 56,700 rounds, raking in over $2.46 million in revenue!
It’s noteworthy that local golfers are the backbone of Whispering Pines, accounting for 71% of all rounds played. This community-centric focus is likely to continue flourishing with the fresh renovations on the horizon.
For those who might not know, Whispering Pines was originally constructed in 1962 by military personnel at the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. The course has seen significant development over the years, with an expansion of nine additional holes in 1986 that established the current layout of nearly 6,800 yards and a par-72 challenge for players.
The city has operated this lovely golf club since 1993 and claimed the property in 2001, ensuring it remains part of recreational activities as mandated by a quitclaim deed. This commitment, alongside professional management from Atlantic Golf Management, has greatly improved the course’s financial performance and operational efficiency.
