The UNI Men’s Golf Team Faces Tough Challenge at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

In a recent performance that might not have gone as planned, the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) men’s golf team finished 15th out of 15 teams at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, which took place in the sunny Palm Desert, California on February 26, 2025. While the results might not be the talk of the town, there were definitely some bright spots worth mentioning for the Panthers.

Shining Stars Amidst the Challenge

The star of the show this time around was Xavier Bighaus from Colorado Christian University, who clinched the individual title with an astonishing performance, scoring 204 (-12). As the competition heated up, Charlotte University managed to bag the team title with a remarkable team score of 833 (-31). It goes to show that even when things don’t go as hoped for one team, others are certainly stepping up to the plate.

Round One: A Steady Start

As the tournament kicked off, JD Pollard took the lead for UNI with a solid score of 73 (+1), placing him in a tie for 46th. Coming in right behind him, sophomore Tanner Dinnebier shot a 75 (+3), landing him at a tied 64th. Connor VanWeelden wasn’t far behind, scoring 77 (+5) which left him in a tie for 76th place. Unfortunately, Calen Bishop and Brock Seiser found the first round a bit more challenging, ending up tied for 86th and 90th with scores of 83 (+11) and 85 (+13), respectively.

Round Two: Turning the Tide

When it came to the second round, Tanner Dinnebier really shone for UNI, scoring 73 (+1) and tying for 59th place. JD Pollard matched him with a score of 75 (+3), similarly ending up in a tie for 59th. Connor VanWeelden rounded out the scoring for UNI with another 75 (+3), placing him in a tie for 72nd. Calen Bishop improved slightly, finishing the round with a 78 (+6), while Brock Seiser shot an 81 (+9), keeping him in 90th place.

Final Round: Giving It Their All

The final round saw the Panthers pushing through to the finish line. JD Pollard once again led the charge for UNI with a score of 79 (+7), securing a tie for 71st with a total score of 227 (+11). Connor VanWeelden was hot on his heels, finishing with a 76 (+4) to end up tied for 73rd with a total of 228 (+12). Tanner Dinnebier had a bit of a tougher time in the last round with an 81 (+9), which landed him in a tie for 76th at 229 (+13). Calen Bishop and Brock Seiser finished the final round with 79 (+7) and 92 (+20), leaving them in 88th and 90th.

Looking Ahead

Even though the UNI men’s golf team faced challenges at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, there are always lessons learned along the way. With their heads held high, the Panthers will shift their focus to the upcoming SDSU Jackrabbit Invitational on March 7-8 at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Nevada. With every round, they gain valuable experience that will surely shape their future performances. So, keep an eye on this team as they continue to grow and tackle their season!
