Welcome to the Treasure Coast, where the year 2024 has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. From unpredictable weather chaos to political drama and transformative development projects, this year has brought a whirlwind of events that locals won’t forget anytime soon.
Let’s kick things off with the major weather standout: Hurricane Milton. This storm made headlines not just for being a hurricane but for whipping up at least 11 tornadoes across Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties on October 9th. Can you believe that? These tornadoes were all over the place, touching down in places like Hobe Sound and Fort Pierce, with some even reaching tornado ratings from EF0 to EF3. The destruction was severe, leading the national media to swarm to our corner of Florida to cover the aftermath, including the tragic news of six lives lost at Spanish Lakes Country Club in St. Lucie County.
Now, imagine trying to secure your home from the storm. Sadly, one man lost his life while putting up hurricane shutters in Port St. Lucie, which tragically brought the death toll to seven. That kind of news is gut-wrenching, and it’s a stark reminder of the risks we face during storm season.
Speaking of rides, Brightline has been zooming through the Treasure Coast, connecting Miami and Orlando since last year. They’ve now agreed to build a $45 million station in Stuart, showcasing the growing fascination with high-speed rail. The county’s keeping its contributions capped at $15 million, and reports suggest ridership is climbing, prompting the addition of more train coaches. From four to five coaches recently—it looks like commuters are all aboard this train!
On the political front, we saw a shake-up in the local government with Doug Smith, an established commissioner, being toppled by political newcomer Eileen Vargas. Vargas ran a campaign so effective that locals even wore T-shirts reading “Trash the Stasche”—a direct jab at Smith’s iconic mustache. In Stuart, similar changes took place, with former Mayor Becky Bruner losing her seat to Laura Giobbi. It seems like residents are eager for fresh faces and ideas!
Former President Donald Trump also made headlines here—not for good or bad reasons, just the usual political entanglements. He was in the hot seat at the Alto Lee Adams Sr. U.S. Courthouse for multiple pretrial hearings regarding his classified documents case. Things took a twist when U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon threw it out back in July. Yet, not all stories ended on a positive note—Ryan Routh, a man charged with attempting to assassinate Trump, is awaiting trial next year after a tumultuous run-in at a golf course.
While political races heated up, we also got a glimpse into the changing landscape of development. St. Lucie County saw a wave of voters choosing to oust some familiar faces, including Sheriff Keith Pearson. That was a nail-biter of an election, to say the least. Over in Vero Beach, officials launched another search for a developer for the coveted Three Corners project after the first pick got disqualified. The anticipation continues as the area holds significant potential.
People are speaking up too. Remember the uproar over Florida’s Great Outdoors Initiative? It sparked protests left and right after plans leaked revealing proposed golf courses in protected parklands. Following the public backlash, Governor Ron DeSantis hit pause on those plans—at least for now.
In lighter news, the famous Buc-ee’s is eyeing a spot on the Treasure Coast, promising visitors a Texas-style travel experience. Just wait until that opens—those brisket sandwiches are to die for!
As we wrap up the busy year of 2024, one thing’s for sure: the Treasure Coast is a vibrant bowl of change and excitement. From mother nature’s wrath to political upheavals and new businesses on the horizon, it’s a world many can hardly keep up with! Buckle up for another thrilling year ahead!
