Groundbreaking Set for Theatre in Downtown Myrtle Beach

Expanding the Art and Innovation District

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – An exciting new development is on the horizon for Myrtle Beach as the city prepares to enhance its Art and Innovation District with a state-of-the-art $22.3 million performing arts theatre. Officials have announced that a groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for July 22 at 10 a.m., marking a significant step forward in the city’s cultural offerings.

Collaborative Efforts to Enhance Cultural Landscape

The project is a collaborative effort involving the city, Coastal Carolina University (CCU), and Monteith Construction. This initiative promises to not only enrich the local community but also attract visitors and students with a vested interest in the performing arts.

The theatre will occupy three historic buildings on Main Street, including the former Broadway Movie Theater. The integration of these buildings aims to preserve Myrtle Beach’s heritage while introducing modern facilities.

Theatre Details and Usage

Designed to seat 300 guests, the venue will be managed by CCU and is expected to open its doors in the summer of 2026. Under the agreement, CCU will use the theatre for its drama and performing arts programs for 150 days each year. Additionally, it will be available for booking by third parties for another 100 days annually. The city of Myrtle Beach will retain 30 days of use, offering ample opportunity for community engagement and local events.

Location and Architectural Integration

Located at 811 Main Street, the site is strategically chosen to align with the broader vision of revitalizing Myrtle Beach’s downtown area. The design and construction plan seeks to seamlessly blend the new construction with the historical aspects of the existing buildings, ensuring that the new theatre complements the architectural integrity of the district.

Future Implications for Myrtle Beach

The addition of the theater is pivotal for the city’s long-term vision of transforming the downtown area into a bustling hub of art, culture, and innovation. By integrating educational elements from CCU and providing a versatile space for both professional and community-led performances, this new theatre is set to become a cornerstone of cultural life in Myrtle Beach.

As the groundwork begins next month, the community watches eagerly, anticipating the cultural enrichment and economic benefits that the new theatre is poised to bring to Myrtle Beach’s vibrant landscape.
