Founded by none other than golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, this inaugural season begins tonight with a thrilling match sure to capture the hearts of golf aficionados across the nation.
This evening’s showdown takes place at the stunning SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Golf fans prepare to cheer for Woods’ Jupiter Links Golf Club, as they take on McIlroy’s very own Boston Common Golf. After a rocky start with a disappointing loss of 12 to 1 in their first match, Woods is feeling the pressure to deliver a much stronger performance this time around. Joining him are teammates Kevin Kisner and newcomer Tom Kim, who is all set to make a splash in his first-ever league match.
But hold on, because McIlroy’s squad is also stacked! They include some serious talent, like Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Masters champion Adam Scott. Although the excitement is palpable, it’s important to note that world number five Hideki Matsuyama will not be on the green to compete in this opening match.
Believe it or not, this exciting league launch has been quite the journey. A year-long delay meant fans had to wait due to various construction challenges and changes in player rosters. However, the curtain has now lifted, and the inaugural matches are set to dazzle golf lovers everywhere!
What makes TGL stand out? For starters, the league features enhanced simulator golf matches that last around two hours. You can catch the action on prime time every Monday and Tuesday evening from January through March. Get ready for an intense season, consisting of fifteen regular-season matches, a four-team playoff bracket, and a nail-biting best-of-three finals to crown the first-ever TGL champion!
Matches are played over fifteen holes with a twist! The first session involves an alternate shot format for holes one through nine, while the latter half of the match consists of singles matches for holes ten through fifteen. Points will be flying as each hole earns players one point. In the end, it’ll be the team with the most points that walks away victorious!
TGL matches are not just about the score, either! Wins will earn teams two points, while those close but not quite good enough will walk away with one point for overtime losses. If you don’t score at all, it’s a big goose egg. Teams can make things interesting with a “hammer” option to double their points on a chosen hole, adding a dose of strategy into the mix.
The competition becomes even tighter as there’s a shot clock! Players have just 40 seconds to take their shot, and anyone who dawdles will soar straight into the penalty zone. And, to further enhance the game experience, each team has four timeouts to use during the matches, adding another layer of strategy.
