Exciting Changes Coming to Myrtle Beach: Surfworks to Build at Broadway at the Beach!
MYRTLE BEACH – Big news for the sandy shores of Myrtle Beach! Surfworks has made a splash by announcing its decision to build its much-anticipated wave park at Broadway at the Beach instead of the original site slated for city sale. The thrill-seeking company shared its plans just recently, highlighting a shift that promises even more fun and entertainment for locals and tourists alike!
What’s the Scoop?
Gone is the idea of Surfworks building a massive $80 million wave park on nearly 22 acres from the city. Instead, they will be setting up shop at the corner of 21st Avenue North and U.S. Highway 17 Bypass, right where the famous Palace Theater once stood. The theater, now just a memory, had been a hot spot for entertainment until it closed its doors back in 2017.
Chad Carlson shares the excitement!
Chad Carlson, the chief financial officer from Burroughs & Chapin, the group that owns Broadway at the Beach, expressed enthusiasm for Surfworks joining their lineup of top attractions. “Surfworks is an exciting addition to Broadway at the Beach! With exciting places like Ripley’s Aquarium and WonderWorks already calling this area home, Surfworks is sure to enhance the fun!” Carlson said.
Financial Changes and Benefits
The latest developments mean that the city of Myrtle Beach won’t be selling Surfworks those 21.6 acres they once discussed for $4.5 million. After a series of contract extensions and earnest money exchanges, Surfworks decided that the new location at Broadway provides better visibility and access for potential visitors. City spokeswoman, Meredith Denari, commented, “This change makes more sense for Surfworks.”
A Place for Everyone!
The new attraction promises to be a hit! Surfworks’ ambitious plans include a thrilling five-acre wave-generating park for up to 84 surfers, a rock-climbing wall, a restaurant, a surf shop, and even a skate park! They also envision an amphitheater capable of seating up to 10,000 people for concerts and events. Can you imagine the level of fun?
Phil Dixon Jr., the CEO of Surfworks, thanked the city of Myrtle Beach for their support as they navigate through this exciting change. In a statement released with the help of an advertising agency, he acknowledged the city officials for their help in making this transition possible.
Future Fun in Myrtle Beach
Surfworks aims to open its doors by 2027, which is great news! They are investing in a 28-acre site with features like a Wavegarden Surf Lagoon, bar and grill, beach club, and “premium accommodations.” The new spot is expected not only to provide a unique experience but also to boost tourism in the city.
A Flashback in Time: The Palace Theater
Once the entertainment gem of Broadway at the Beach, the Palace Theater was home to many legendary performances and events. From Kenny Rogers to the Rockettes, this venue has left its mark on Myrtle Beach’s history. The theater was over 20 years old before it met its demise, unable to stand strong against the ravages of Hurricane Bonnie in 1998 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016.
What Does This Mean for Myrtle Beach?
The opening of Surfworks is predicted to create around 140 jobs and further establish Myrtle Beach as a must-visit destination. With over 13 million visitors flocking to Broadway at the Beach annually, this new attraction seems destined for a warm welcome!
Locals and visitors alike have something to look forward to with Surfworks making waves in Myrtle Beach. Who is excited? We surely are!
