Myrtle Beach, hold on to your hats! Just when you think everything is calm, news like this comes up. The Horry County Police Department put out a statement recently regarding a statewide manhunt that took a wild turn, ending in an officer-involved shooting. It all began in the small town of McBee when a routine traffic stop escalated in a troubling way.
The drama kicked off Thursday night when 27-year-old Alston Modlin allegedly shot at a police officer during the stop. Can you believe that? Talk about a shocking turn of events! After that, authorities launched a massive search for Modlin, which quickly escalated to a Blue Alert, alerting the entire state to the crisis.
Fast forward to Friday morning, and things took yet another twist. The Horry County Police reported that the pursuit led them to a spot near Una Road in Lee County, where another round of chaos took place, resulting in an officer-involved shooting.
According to the Lee County Coroner’s Office, things took a tragic turn as they confirmed that Modlin was killed in that shootout. Not only was there loss of life, but a Lee County deputy was also injured, and sorrowfully, a K-9 unit named Mikka lost its life as well. Such a heart-wrenching situation for everyone involved!
Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon wanted to share some words of gratitude during this tough time. He mentioned how lucky they feel to have the support of state agencies and various regional departments pitching in to lend a hand. “There’s been so much community support from near and far, and each person and agency that has reached out to check on us and offered their prayers is appreciated,” said Sheriff Simon. That truly warms the heart, doesn’t it?
He also emphasized the loss of K-9 Mikka, stating that this brave pup was considered a crucial member of their team, just like any other officer. It’s always such a difficult moment when we hit loss, and feeling the community rally around the police department is uplifting amidst the somber news.
As of Saturday morning, the HCPD cleared the area around 2 a.m., but make no mistake: the investigation is far from over. They are leading the inquiry into Modlin’s death, as multiple agencies, including other local and state law enforcement entities, were involved. It’s a complicated matter, and despite everything that’s happened, the community here really needs to stay informed and supported.
It’s not every day that such serious incidents unfold around here. It makes you think about safety and the risks our police officers take every single day to keep us safe. So, as we all process these events, let’s take a moment to appreciate our law enforcement and the sacrifices they make, sometimes unseen.
We’ll be on the lookout for further updates as the story continues to develop. Myrtle Beach, let’s support each other and our local heroes!
