The Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. visited South Carolina to discuss the growing Canadian investments in the state, speaking with local officials and business leaders. This conversation highlighted the keen interest Canadian companies have in expanding operations within South Carolina.
As of March 2024, South Carolina has been sending a whopping $4.99 billion worth of goods and services to Canada, making it the state’s second-largest trading partner after Germany. Overall, South Carolina’s exports have climbed to $37.3 billion, showcasing an impressive 18% growth in trade, especially as U.S. exports have faced a slight downturn of 2.2% compared to the previous year.
With 154 Canadian-owned companies now gracing the South Carolina landscape, approximately 13,450 residents are employed thanks to these thriving businesses. Excitingly, two new companies are making their way into the state, promising to create an additional 845 jobs in the region!
One of those newcomers, Niagara Pharmaceuticals, is investing a significant $9 million to make Cherokee County its first U.S. operation, bringing 45 jobs along with it. Meanwhile, Silfab Solar plans a more ambitious venture with a planned investment of $150 million in York County. This project aims to produce cutting-edge solar cell technology and is expected to generate a remarkable 800 jobs.
According to the Ambassador, one of the key attractions for Canadian companies is South Carolina’s business-friendly environment. The state is particularly appealing in the high-tech and advanced manufacturing sectors, drawing in businesses that thrive in those fields.
The COVID-19 pandemic notably underscored the importance of South Carolina in Canada’s production landscape, particularly in the automotive manufacturing sector. As companies adapt to new protocols and innovate their supply chains, the economic bonds between these two nations become even more evident.
Canada also plays a vital role in South Carolina’s tourism sector, standing as the top foreign source of visitors. Annually, between 10,000 and 15,000 Canadians explore everything the state has to offer. Interestingly, the only international flight into Charleston operates on a daily basis from Toronto, making it easy for tourists to hop over and enjoy Southern hospitality.
Beyond trade, Canada and the United States share a robust defense relationship, with over 1,000 military personnel engaged in joint operations and training programs. This military collaboration showcases the depth of the relationship between the nations.
