Myrtle Beach-area nonprofit hosting 5K to raise money for high school seniors

Local nonprofit Brave at Heart Foundation is hosting its first-ever March Wellness 5K on Saturday to help incoming college freshmen pay for school. Each year, the nonprofit gives out $500 scholarships to high school seniors from Horry and Georgetown counties. Students from Williamsburg County are also being included this year.

Brave at Heart Foundation CEO Rome Vereen said it’s given out nearly $50,000 since 2016, when a group who graduated from Socastee High School, formed the organization to give back to the community. Vereen said he hopes the 5K becomes an annual event that can fully fund the program in the future with hopes of also raising the scholarship amount. He said a little goes a long way for those students, and it’s all about rewarding them for their hard work.

‘I’ve always been told that every bit helps,” said Vereen. “That’s the goal, to help someone, identify students out here doing well, and assist them with what they’re trying to do with their future.”

Vereen said the group is expecting around 100 people to participate in Saturday’s March Wellness 5K. If you’d like to join, it’s $35 to participate, and you can register online by clicking here.
