The reality dating show “The Bachelorette” bid goodbye to Myrtle Beach’s contestant, Sam McKinney, after a six-week streak. His not-so-graceful departure occurred after lead, Jenn Tran, decided it was time for him to go home. The 27-year-old contractor, who enjoyed an optimistic start to the season, will be remembered for his spiraling journey towards elimination.
McKinney, who defines himself as a “softie,” won the show’s First Impression Rose, propelling him to the next round. However, episodes later his actions began to stir up controversy, including a difficulty to “keep it PG” during one-on-one time with Tran, tension with another contestant, and aggressive remarks about those coming between him and Tran. Despite these incidents, he managed to stay on the show until week six.
The group date on a Seattle radio show “Love on Air” proved to be a turning point for Tran’s relationship with McKinney. An on-air question and answer session turned sour when McKinney was not able to answer effectively about his first impressions of Tran. His inappropriate comment about the Fantasy Suite and lack of a substantial response when Tran expressed her grievances showed a disconnect between the two.
On what turned out to be his last night on the show, McKinney made a blunder by confessing his love for Tran. The unexpected confession seemed not to be received well by Tran, dismissing McKinney’s words as incoherent and shocking.
The mismatch in their communication led to Tran sending McKinney home. She cited his responses as reminiscent of a relationship phase she had already put behind. Despite being ousted from the show, McKinney defended himself, terming Tran’s energy as ‘very dull’ and said that his elimination was not his fault.
After being dropped from show, McKinney took to social media to express his feelings. He admitted that he wasn’t able to show his emotions properly owing to the nature of the setting. He thanked his fans for their unwavering support and said that he hoped to find long-term love eventually.
The departure of McKinney marks another twist in “The Bachelorette” journey. However, it also shines light on the importance of effective communication and compatibility in relationships, even within the context of a reality show.
