In the heart of Myrtle Beach, the spotlight shines brightly on a dedicated educator who has made quite the impact on students and teachers alike. Ryan Poston, the principal of St. James High School, has been honored as the January Administrator of the Month. His hard work, commitment to student success, and passion for education have not gone unnoticed, and the community is buzzing with pride!
Poston’s path to principalship is nothing short of inspiring. Originally hailing from the quaint town of Johnsonville, South Carolina, he has accumulated an impressive 21 years of experience in the education field. After earning his bachelor’s degree in political science from Francis Marion University, he initially set his sights on a career in law. However, fate had other plans when he began coaching at his old high school.
While coaching, Poston discovered a profound joy in engaging with students that led him to pivot his career towards teaching. A little time spent as a student teacher in a middle school convinced him of his true passion: working with high school students, where he felt he could make the most significant impact.
Under the guidance of Principal James Berry from Johnsonville High School, Poston pursued a master’s in administration to better equip himself for the challenges ahead. His teaching career began at Johnsonville High School for five years before he brought his talents to York Comprehensive High School, where he spent an impressive 13 years in various roles, including teacher, coach, assistant principal, and eventually principal.
Now in his third year as principal at St. James High School, Poston continues to exemplify leadership. He believes that teaching is central to both teaching and administration, and while he misses those everyday moments of interaction with students, he aims to foster a caring and supportive environment for them and the faculty members.
St. James High School is currently in the running for the prestigious Palmetto’s Finest Award, a testament to the hard work being done under Poston’s leadership. He is quick to credit the supportive district staff for providing excellent resources that enable success. It’s clear that he has a deep appreciation for his students and colleagues, referring to them as “awesome” and recognizing the special bond shared at SJHS.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Ryan Poston enjoys quality time with his family. He and his wife, along with their three children, savor life at the beach, often visiting his brother’s place in Garden City. An active family, they indulge in outdoor activities like golfing, fishing, and soaking up the sun on sandy shores. Poston’s passion for cooking, particularly barbecuing and smoking meat, adds flavor to family gatherings.
Ryan’s education journey has been shaped by influences like Mr. Cooper, his agriculture teacher and FFA director, as well as Mr. Love, a former administrator who served as a mentor. Such experiences have undoubtedly fueled his drive to make a difference in the lives of young people.
As the community celebrates Ryan Poston, it also serves as a reminder to recognize and honor the exceptional educators making strides in our schools.
