First Alert: Dangerous Strong Rip Currents Expected Today

On August 17, 2024, in Myrtle Beach, S.C., significant swells from Hurricane Ernesto are predicted to create dangerous surf as well as strong rip currents on the coastline. The local authorities have issued a high rip current risk alert, indicating life-threatening rip currents as a distinct possibility. The announcement comes as a caution for all beach goers, urging them to avoid entering the surf zone, which could potentially prove to be perilous.

Understanding Rip Currents

A rip current is a formidable counter-flow, often channelizing away from the shore. These swift currents typically extend from the shoreline, passing through the surf zone, and beyond the line of breaking waves. In many cases, even the strongest of swimmers find it difficult to combat the forces exerted by them.

What To Do If Caught in a Rip Current?

Individuals caught in a rip current must quickly call out for help while trying to stay calm and conserve energy. Without panic, the person should try to stay afloat, awaiting help. If possible, swimming out of the current and then back towards the shoreline may work as an effective rescue strategy. However, in case of extreme exhaustion or inability to swim against the current veering from the line of the current and floating or treading water might be a safer choice until professional help arrives.

Other News From Myrtle Beach

Elsewhere in Myrtle Beach, the construction of a new ocean outfall is scheduled to commence on Monday. A dislodged fishing boat that had previously washed ashore at Cherry Grove, has now managed to find its way back to the sea. The Coast Guard along with SCDNR have also issued a critical “No Wake Zone” along the Intracoastal Waterway, due to the rising threat from Hurricane Ernesto.

Moreover, in light of the severe weather conditions, city-wide water pressure problems are being reported from Florence in the aftermath of another storm, Debby, which has aggravated the situation further.

Hurricane Ernesto and its Impact

Ernesto has been forecasted to restrengthen to a hurricane, thus posing a risk of more dangerous rip currents along the east coast. A number of incidents, including vehicle crashes and lane blockages on East Highway 9, have been reported in its path of destruction.

As we continue to monitor Ernesto’s trajectory and impact, we urge residents and visitors in the affected areas to be cautious and prepared for potential emergency situations. Stay tuned to HERE News Network for timely updates on the situation.
