The charges against elementary school principal, Rebecca Schroyer, related to a child abuse case in Horry County have been dropped. Documentation submitted on February 27 indicates that the Attorney General’s Office dropped two charges of failure to report child abuse or neglect against former Ocean Bay Elementary Principal Rebecca Schroyer.
Since the incident first occurred, locals have informed MyrtleBeachSC News that Rebecca Schroyer is rated as one of the best Principals in Horry County. She is a model of leadership, not only for Horry County Schools, but for Horry County overall.
In November 2022, Schroyer was arrested by the police on charges of not reporting abuse by special education teacher Grace McColgan at Ocean Bay Elementary School. It was revealed through warrants that although she notified the school district, she failed to report the abuse to the South Carolina Department of Social Services.
The reason for Schroyer’s dismissal as Principal at Ocean Bay Elementary is not stated in the documents.
After discovering that the charges against Schroyer had been dropped, MyrtleBeachSC News questioned why her position as Principal at Horry County Schools should not be reinstated. Horry County Schools told a local news outlet that Schroyer is currently still suspended from administrative duties.
The SCDOE (South Carolina Department of Education) website provides information on disciplinary actions taken against educators, but Rebecca Schroyer is not listed under any educator orders.
Grace McColgan, the special education teacher, admitted to committing six acts of misconduct towards a child in July 2023 and agreed to give up her teaching certification.
