Exciting Developments at Possum Trot Golf Course in Myrtle Beach

Big Changes Ahead for North Myrtle Beach’s Beloved Possum Trot Golf Course

North Myrtle Beach is buzzing with excitement as the popular Possum Trot Golf Course is set to embark on a thrilling new chapter. That’s right, folks! This beloved golf course, located at 1180 Possum Trot Road, is not only undergoing development but is also being annexed into the city of North Myrtle Beach. So, what does this mean for avid golfers and the local community? Let’s dig in!

Why the Nickname “Friendly Course”?

Possum Trot is affectionately nicknamed the “Friendly Course”. And it’s not just because of the friendly staff, though they certainly make everyone feel welcome! The reason lies in the generous fairways that invite golfers to unleash their swing. Spanning 6,966 yards and featuring a traditional par 72 layout, this course boasts a mix of challenges and straightforward play. Just picture it: big hitters can enjoy blasting away on most holes, while the easier approach allows for a fun day out on the greens.

What to Expect on the Greens

But don’t let the friendly nature fool you completely – there are defenses in place! For starters, most greens are tiny, sometimes so small that they could resemble a postage stamp. Precision with your iron play is crucial if you want to score a birdie! Some holes can even be beastly in length, testing the patience and skill of golfers. To make things a bit more interesting, there’s water lurking on eight holes, adding to the thrill.

Possum Trot is part of the Glens Golf Group, which also includes Heather Glen and Glen Dornoch, located in Little River, and Shaftesbury Glen near Conway. Though it may not be the most luxurious of the group, it consistently provides excellent conditions at a reasonable price. During a recent round in early March, the greens were in spectacular shape, while the fairways felt like they had just been carpeted! You might run into Bermuda grass roughs still resting during winter, but don’t let that dissuade you.

A Heartfelt Connection

For many, including seasoned golfers, Possum Trot holds a special place in their hearts. It was one of the first courses many played during their vacations here in the early 1990s. It holds a nostalgic charm, with a traditional layout that draws comparisons to the beloved older courses back in New York state.

Birdie Opportunities Abound!

Now, let’s talk about those birdie opportunities. Big hitters will have their eyes on the delightful par 5 holes. The standout is the friendly 10th hole, coming in at just 500 yards. Despite giving your “winter rust” a chance to show during gameplay, you might just find yourself close enough to the green in two shots, making the birdie feel attainable. Other enticing par 5s, like the 533-yard first and 530-yard fifth, progressively invite players to take a swing for the stars.

Beware the Tough Ones!

But wait – don’t get too cocky just yet! You might feel that exhilaration at the 10th hole, but chances are that excitement will be met with harsh reality at the notorious 11th hole, nicknamed “Pig Possum.” This 460-yard par 4 seems innocently wide, but with wind cutting through from the nearby Atlantic Ocean, it’s a beast. Testing your skill here will surely make you think twice before celebrating that last birdie!

A Course with Rustic Charm

True to the area, Possum Trot retains a rustic charm. Established in 1968, it offers a no-frills golfing experience that appeals to those looking for authenticity. With no elaborate clubhouses or extravagant features, it remains inviting for those wanting an uncomplicated outing.

Getting There is a Breeze

Ready to hit the greens? Getting to Possum Trot is a breeze! Just take U.S. 17 north into North Myrtle Beach and turn left onto Possum Trot Road. Well maintained and full of heart, this course remains a local favorite that promises a fun day regardless of your skill level.

With this exciting change on the horizon, golf enthusiasts can hardly wait to see how the Possum Trot Golf Course evolves as it joins the North Myrtle Beach community. Will it continue to offer that friendly atmosphere? Will newcomers flock to enjoy the generous fairways? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure:** golf in Myrtle Beach just got an exciting twist!**
