Hey, golf lovers! If you’ve ever found yourself in the wonderful North Myrtle Beach area, you’re probably no stranger to the charming Possum Trot Golf Course. Well, buckle up, because some exciting changes are on the horizon for this beloved “Friendly Course.” Not only is it being planned for development, but it’s also set to be annexed into the city. Let’s dive into the details!
Located at 1180 Possum Trot Road, this 6,966-yard golf course has earned a reputation over the years for its generous fairways and welcoming vibe. It’s called the “Friendly Course” for a reason! A traditional course that plays to a par 72, Possum Trot is the perfect playground for players of all skill levels. Of course, big hitters especially have a lot to be excited about, as the par 5 holes are quite reachable with a couple of solid drive shots.
But don’t let the friendly name fool you! While it might seem like a walk in the park, there are challenges lurking around each corner. First up, the course has its fair share of tiny greens. We’re talking postage stamp sizes on some holes! Accurate iron play is a must if you ever dream of sinking a birdie. Plus, water hazards come into play on eight holes, which keeps players on their toes!
If you’re looking to snag some birdies, the par 5 tenth hole is where it’s at. This 500-yard beauty plays a slightly shorter 471 yards from the white tees. You could find yourself pin high with a couple of well-placed shots. Not to mention, the fairways here are like a dream – super wide and forgiving on errant tee shots. Even on a rough day, a recovery shot can get you close to the green.
Other birdie opportunities pop up on the 360-yard seventh and the 390-yard eleventh holes. No driver needed here! The prevailing winds might challenge you, but it adds to the fun. The eleventh hole, famously known as “Pig Possum,” stretches out at 460 yards. It’s all about the uphill approach to a sizeable green, so be prepared for a challenge!
First laid down in 1968, Possum Trot offers a simple yet satisfying golfing experience, a refreshing break from today’s overly-complicated courses. With its no-frills approach – think smaller clubhouses and fewer bunkers – you’ll just find good old-fashioned golf here. Plus, the pro shop has all the essentials, although it’s a bit on the small side, and the snack bar serves tasty food at pocket-friendly prices!
As part of the Glens Golf Group, which includes other gems like Heather Glen and Glen Dornoch in Little River, the allure of Possum Trot has always stayed strong. Though a little more affordable than its sister courses, you’ll often find it in fantastic shape. During one recent visit in early March, the greens were honestly in the best condition I’ve seen.
And let’s not forget about logistics – getting to this gem is a breeze! Just cruise on U.S. 17 north and make a left onto Possum Trot Road, which can be spotted right before Overtime Sports Café. With sloped ratings of 127 from the back tees and 118 from the men’s tees, there’s something for everyone.
With the upcoming annexation into North Myrtle Beach, the future looks bright for Possum Trot. As the plans unfold, we can only hope this beloved course continues to charm locals and visitors alike with its familiar, friendly atmosphere.
So whether you’re a seasoned pro or just getting started, keep Possum Trot on your radar. You just might find your new favorite spot to tee off!
