Monday was not an ordinary day for the residents of Anderson County in South Carolina. Routine became unrest when law enforcement officials arrested a man at a local gas station, accused of possessing a pipe bomb in his car.
Identified as 39-year-old James Turner, the suspect was initially targeted for a wellness check at the QuikTrip gas station. When Anderson County officials arrived at the scene, the situation escalated rapidly. Turner was not only found in possession of drugs but was also found in possession of counterfeit money.
An exhaustive search of Turner’s vehicle led to a horrifying discovery: bomb-like materials. With suspicions of bomb possession, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office’s Bomb Squad was urgently summoned to the scene.
With Turner’s vehicle identified as a potential threat, immediate security measures were taken. Law enforcement officials promptly shut down Whitehall Road and North Main Street in the interest of public safety. As the technicians from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office’s Bomb Squad further assessed the situation, the object was confirmed to be a pipe bomb.
Post confirmation, the pipe bomb was carefully removed from the suspect’s car. The script of this eerie narrative continued when the law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at Turner’s residence on Awaken Court.
The search operation at his residence only added to the grim scenario. More counterfeit items, including fake money and printers, were uncovered. After these discoveries, Turner was booked into the Anderson City Jail.
The unsettling discoveries, paired with the initial charges against Turner for drug and counterfeit money possession, could result in more potential charges. This investigation’s expanded scope comes from the collaborative effort of the Anderson Police Department with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, the Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).
With the investigation still under progress, law enforcement officials anticipate more potential charges against James Turner.
Monday’s events have reverberated around Anderson, leaving the community with a sense of unease. The ordinariness of a supposed wellness check at a local gas station has flipped into a narrative of drugs, counterfeit money, and a pipe bomb. The community now awaits further information as law enforcement continues the ongoing investigation.
