On July 22nd, Myrtle Beach will observe the groundbreaking of its new Performing Arts Theatre. The ceremony is set to start at 10:00 am at 811 Main Street, located in the Arts and Innovation District.
The future 300-seat theatre will incorporate three historic buildings, one of which is the former Broadway Movie Theater, and involves a construction budget of $22.3 million. The project will make use of $4.9 million in historical tax credits.
Coastal Carolina University (CCU) will utilize the venue for its drama and performing arts programs, maintaining it in exchange for significant usage rights, including 150 days per year. The city retains access for 30 days annually, ensuring opportunities for local cultural engagements.
The theatre is part of a broader initiative aimed at revitalizing downtown, with the city investing over $100 million in land acquisitions. This investment underscores a commitment to economic expansion and community enhancement.
The establishment of the Performing Arts Theatre will enrich the local cultural scene and exemplify successful collaboration between public entities, educational institutions, and the community. Scheduled to open in the summer of 2026, the venue is anticipated to act as a center for creativity and urban redevelopment.
The community eagerly awaits the groundbreaking, looking forward to the future narratives and experiences the new theatre will facilitate, contributing to public pride and collective memory.
