Myrtle Beach and Coastal Carolina University Set to Launch New Chapter with Performing Arts Theatre

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Myrtle Beach in collaboration with Coastal Carolina University (CCU) has announced the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Performing Arts Theatre, initiating construction within the Arts and Innovation District.

Event Details and Project Insights

The ceremony is set for 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 22, 2024, at 811 Main Street. The development involves transforming three historic buildings, including the former Broadway Movie Theater, into a contemporary 300-seat venue.

Strategic Collaboration and Financial Framework

Under a lease agreement, Coastal Carolina University will manage the theater, utilizing it for its drama and performing arts programs. The university will have 150 ‘use days’ per year for its activities, and will also oversee 100 days for third-party events. The city will maintain 30 ‘use days’ for local cultural functions.

The project, costing an estimated $22.3 million, is projected to receive $4.9 million in historical tax credits, aiding in the preservation of the area’s architectural legacy.

Long-term Vision and Impact

Projected to complete by summer 2026, the theatre aims to serve as a cultural hub, enhancing university and community initiatives alike. This endeavor reflects a collective commitment to bolster the creative landscape of Myrtle Beach and to anchor the Arts and Innovation District at the heart of downtown’s revitalization.
