Early Wednesday morning, a horrific incident on Highway 17 Bypass resulted in the death of a pedestrian who was struck by two separate vehicles, as per reports from the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP).

According to SCHP Corporal David Jones, the tragic scene unfolded around 2:15 a.m. near Wood Thrush Drive in Horry County. The victim, who was attempting to traverse the road, was initially struck by a 2002 Lexus four-door. Following the initial impact, a second, unidentified vehicle also struck the pedestrian before hastily departing from the scene.

Continuing Investigation

Details regarding the pedestrian and the hit-and-run driver have yet to be released. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently conducting an extensive investigation into the incident.

The authorities are urging anyone with pertinent information to come forward. More specifically, the SCHP is seeking help in tracking down the second vehicle involved in the accident, which fled the scene shortly after the incident.

In cases such as these, citizens can play a crucial role in aiding the investigation. Any details, no matter how minute, can be critical in shedding light on circumstances around the incident and leading to potential suspects. Therefore, the South Carolina Highway Patrol encourages those with information to step forward either by contacting them directly or through an anonymous tip line.

Call for Increased Safety Measures

This tragic incident heightens the existing concern about pedestrian safety on highways. It shines a spotlight on the pressing need for stricter traffic regulations to reduce speed, improved road crossing infrastructure, and intensive awareness campaigns emphasizing the importance of driving attentively and safely.
