Parents discussing school board issues

News Summary

Frustration is escalating among parents at PALM Charter High School in Conway, SC, due to prolonged delays in board elections. With no elections held since Spring 2024, parents feel their voices are ignored and are calling for better representation and leadership. Amid concerns over school performance and communication issues, an emergency election is scheduled to fill three vacant board positions, reflecting a community eager for positive change in their children’s education.

Conway Parents Frustrated Over Delays in Board Elections at PALM Charter High School

In the sunny town of Conway, South Carolina, discontent is brewing among parents at PALM Charter High School, which has been facing some serious challenges relating to its board elections and leadership. It seems that some board members have been hanging onto their seats for too long, and parents are not happy about it!

What’s the Latest on the Board Elections?

During a recent work session with the Horry County School Board, updates on the school’s new bylaws were shared. But there’s a significant catch – PALM Charter High hasn’t held board member elections since Spring 2024, which is a big no-no since state law clearly states that annual elections must be conducted. It’s been a hot topic, and with parents growing increasingly frustrated, it’s clear something needs to change.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know!

With the absence of elections, parents are feeling ignored, and rightly so. They have voiced their concerns about decisions being made “behind closed doors.” Many have expressed their desire to have a board that is more reflective of the school’s community needs, given that only one board member currently has children enrolled at PALM—hardly representative!

Bringing in the Experts

To help steer PALM back on track, school attorney Tyler Turner has joined the fray, although many in the room had plenty of questions for him regarding his role and how the board election process was going to unfold. Communication and transparency are key words on the minds of everyone involved.

New Bylaws and Upcoming Elections

Revisions to the bylaws were discussed, taking almost six months to amend—a sign that the process has not been running smoothly. Earlier attempts to pass new bylaws on December 16 of last year were allegedly mishandled. However, this problem seems headed for a resolution as the Public Charter School Alliance of South Carolina has agreed to oversee special board elections, quickly scheduled for the upcoming Tuesday and Thursday. Parents are eager for these elections to help fill three vacant board seats with five candidates vying for the positions!

Concerns About School Performance

Adding to the parents’ frustration is the school’s graduation rate, which stood at 79.2% in 2023. Although this is not too far off from the district-wide rate of 82.1% and the statewide rate of 83.8%, parents believe that better leadership could help drive those numbers higher. With nearly half of PALM’s student body classified as disadvantaged, the importance of strong governance can’t be overstated.

Hands-On Learning and Resource Challenges

The school prides itself on offering a unique hybrid learning experience, featuring hands-on classes in fields such as automotive and motorsports technology, welding, and digital arts. However, funding for vocational training equipment often relies heavily on grants and donations—a vulnerability that some parents are keenly aware of as they push for improvements.

A Thumbs Down for the Principal

The school board’s recent decision to not renew the contract of suspended principal Avery Moore, due to alleged misconduct related to a school trip, has only heightened the need for clearer communication and accountability within the leadership. Parents are clamoring for transparency over such incidents, fueling their push for a more engaged and representative board.

Conclusion: A Call for Action

With an emergency election on the horizon, the ongoing leadership issues at PALM Charter High School have spurred parents to take action. They’re determined to replace current board members whom they consider biased and demand immediate reforms. Parents hope that new leadership will pave the way for a brighter future for their children’s education.

In the world of education, every voice matters, and it looks like the parents of PALM Charter High School are ready to make themselves heard.
