What a heartwarming and powerful day it was in North Myrtle Beach! The North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex transformed into a sea of purple as hundreds of community members gathered for the fourth annual Domestic Violence Walk. This event isn’t just about walking it’s also about awareness and support for those affected by domestic violence.
Starting at 10 a.m. and wrapping up at 2 p.m., this year’s theme, “What a difference a mile makes,” aimed to hit home the impact small actions can have on victims and their families. Event chairwoman Kim Allen shared the chilling statistic that “one in three women and one in four men” will experience some form of domestic violence. And this issue doesn’t just stay with adults; it trickles down to our children as well. There’s a vital need for information and resources out there, and this event was a key component in making that available to the community.
One of the highlights of the event was hearing from survivor speakers, who bravely shared their stories. Their words resonated with many and were instrumental in raising awareness. Kim Allen emphasized how crucial these stories are, saying, “People may not be aware, but we need to make sure they know where to turn if they find themselves in need.” It’s all about empowerment and creating a safe space for conversations that are often challenging but necessary.
This year brought something special: a lively festival following the walk! Kathy Haegan, president of the North Myrtle Beach Women’s Club, expressed her delight at the number of vendors present, calling it a “great success.” Participants could explore various informational tables, each designed to provide help or resources, all while enjoying the festive atmosphere. “We are so appreciative of everyone that came out today to support this cause,” she added. It’s clear that awareness is needed not only in North Myrtle Beach but across the entire state.
Many locals showed up for this important event, with folks traveling from Little River, Myrtle Beach, and even as far as Loris. Co-chairwoman Valerie Clark said she couldn’t have been happier with the turnout: “I’m just glad so many people could come out today.” This community support goes a long way in spreading the word that domestic violence is an issue that affects everyone and should not go unnoticed.
One key takeaway from the event is that while it was about raising funds and advocating for victims, it was also about bringing the community together. It’s so important to break the silence surrounding domestic violence and to show that the community stands together. Whether you walked the mile or volunteered, each person who participated made a difference.
As the event wraps up for this year, we can look forward to its growth and the difference it will make in our community in the years to come. So here’s to a wonderful day of unity, awareness, and action! North Myrtle Beach is proud to stand up against domestic violence.
