Tragic Crashes Near North Myrtle Beach Spark Road Closures and Investigations

It was a somber weekend for the charming coastal city of North Myrtle Beach as two separate crashes led to serious incidents, causing traffic disruptions and heartfelt reflections in the community.

Highway Shutdowns Following Weekend Accident

On Saturday, the North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue team reported that multiple lanes on Highway 31 were closed due to an unfortunate crash. Specifically, the northbound lanes were shut down between Robert Grissom/International Drive and Water Tower Road. After some time, one of the northbound lanes on Highway 31 was reopened for slow-moving traffic, providing a glimmer of hope for those stuck in the gridlock.

A Fatal Incident Unfolds on Sunday Morning

As the sun was rising on Sunday at approximately 3:15 a.m., a devastating accident occurred near North Myrtle Beach that left one person dead and another injured. The crash took place on secondary Highway 57 at the intersection with Highway 90. Involved in this tragic event was a 2014 Hyundai SUV, which was reportedly traveling south when it was struck by a 2016 GMC pickup traveling north.

The driver of the Hyundai was pronounced dead at the scene, marking the start of a much heavier atmosphere in the community as it mourned the loss. The passenger in the Hyundai, identified as the 63-year-old Tammy Blanton from Little River, was seriously injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. Luckily, the driver of the GMC pickup, who was the sole occupant of that vehicle, escaped without injuries. The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) is currently conducting an investigation into this devastating incident, and community members are left reeling from the shock.

Another Fatal Collision Shakes the Community

Just a day prior to the unfortunate events on Highway 57, another fatal incident occurred on Sea Mountain Highway that added to the sorrow of the weekend. On Saturday, April 5, a 62-year-old moped driver tragically lost their life in a two-vehicle collision. This crash unfolded at 1:32 p.m., right at the intersection of Sea Mountain Highway and Morgan Avenue.

A 2003 Honda motorcycle was reportedly struck by a Cadillac SUV that made a right turn onto Sea Mountain from Morgan Avenue. The motorcycle driver was transported to the hospital, yet sadly succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival. The driver of the Cadillac SUV, however, miraculously emerged from the crash uninjured. Like the previous incident, this collision is also under thorough investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Community Response to the Tragedy

The North Myrtle Beach community is coming together during this hard time to honor the victims and reflect on the importance of road safety. These tragic accidents serve as a reminder for all drivers to remain vigilant and cautious while navigating busy roadways. In the wake of such sorrow, local leaders and first responders are encouraging the public to always wear seatbelts, obey traffic signals, and stay alert while driving.

As investigations continue into these fatal incidents, the community holds its breath, hoping for answers and healing. During this time, thoughts and prayers are extended to the families affected by these heartbreaking events.

As the weekend ends on a somber note, it’s a chance for all of us to remember the fragility of life and the necessity for careful driving. Let’s take extra care on the roads, keep an eye out for our fellow drivers, and commit to making our streets safer for everyone.
