North Carolina A&T Men’s Golf Team Finds Their Groove at the Surf Club Invitational

The sun was shining, the fairways were lush, and the North Carolina A&T men’s golf team kicked off their first round at the Surf Club Invitational with a spirited performance at the beautiful 6,604-yard.par 71 Surf Club course in North Myrtle Beach, SC. While they may have started slow, there’s plenty of charm to the game, and it’s all part of the experience!

Team Standings: A Competitive Field

After a strong round, the Aggies finished the first leg tied for 12th place alongside Purdue-Fort Wayne, with a total score of 11-over par 295. Although they are currently trailing the tournament leader, UConn, by 16 strokes—who is impressively sitting at 4-under par 280—the day is still young! In fact, Longwood follows closely behind in second at 2-under par 282, while tournament host Appalachian State showcases a strong performance in third with an even-par score of 284.

Fresh Faces Making Waves

Leading the pack for the Aggies was freshman sensation Javier Morgado, who displayed impressive talent throughout his round. Morgado finished with a score of 1-over par 72, which placed him in a 14-way tie for 24th. Starting off on the par-4, 444-yard eighth hole, he carefully carved through the course. After parring the first two holes and birdying the 462-yard 10th hole, he faced a couple of bogeys on the next three holes—but the player wasn’t discouraged!

Morgado closed out the back nine with five straight pars, a satisfying way to maintain balance. Then, he kicked off the front nine with back-to-back birdies on the first and second holes before encountering a slight setback with a double bogey on the third hole. Rebounding like a pro, he bounced back to bury the 516-yard par-5 fifth hole before finishing strong with pars on the final two holes.

Support from the Team

Not far behind, sophomore Camilo Marin and fellow freshman Pedro Pereira both shot rounds of 73, tying for 38th place. Marin’s round had its highlights with a beautiful birdie on the 324-yard par 4, 11th hole, and a stunning birdie on the 179-yard par-3 13th hole. Although he faced a tricky double bogey on the 14th, Marin wrapped up his day with another birdie on the 5th hole, leaving him with plenty of satisfaction.

Pereira, on the other hand, took his first swing off the 10th tee, finding himself at plus-3 after just three holes. However, true to the spirit of golf, he rallied back with a wonderful birdie on the 357-yard par-4 14th and smoothly transitioned his momentum to another birdie on the 499-yard first hole. Unfortunately, a double bogey on the eighth hole weighed him down a bit, leaving him at 2-over par overall.

A Solid Contribution

Freshman Agib Hughes added depth to their performance, finishing with a score of 77. With each player’s contribution, the team displayed a hard-fought effort in what is sure to be an exciting tournament.
