North Myrtle Beach Greenlights $27M Expansion Plan for Sports Complex

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The officials of North Myrtle Beach have given the green light for a significant expansion to the city’s Park and Sports Complex. The ambitious project, set to enhance the community’s sports and recreational services, has been sanctioned with a whopping $27 million funding plan.

Meeting Growing Sporting Demands

The local government seeks to address the skyrocketing interest in youth sports manifesting itself in increased participation rates, which according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, had gained more than half of all American children aged six to 17 by 2020. The city representatives expressed the expansion would enable North Myrtle Beach to house larger sporting tournaments and facilitate multiple events simultaneously.

Project Components and Timeline

Including six new baseball fields, five soccer fields, freshwater ponds, walking trails, playgrounds, and picnic shelters, the multi-faceted enlargement scheme started its initial phases in May, with grubbing, site preparation, grading, and erosion control. Upon the successful completion of these preliminary steps, the city expects to finish the second phase by September 2025. The sports complex is conveniently located at the intersection of South Carolina Highway 31 and Robert Edge Parkway.

Economic Impact and Future Prospects

North Myrtle Beach’s Park and Sports Complex are known to attract over 1,800 teams each year, facilitating a significant boost to local businesses. The athletic and sports tourism director of the city had projected an economic impact of around $36 million from the sports complex in the previous year. The imminent expansion will likely draw teams and spectators from all corners of the country, if not the entire Southeast, further augmenting the local economy through increased activity in hotels, entertainment facilities, and restaurants.
