‘Not too safe anymore’: Neighbors worry about safety after Myrtle Beach area shooting

In a worrying development, residents in the Waterway Gardens neighborhood near the Intracoastal Waterway off Terrace View Court in Myrtle Beach are expressing concerns for their safety following an early morning shooting incident. Local authorities have confirmed that the Horry County Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting that took place around 12:41 a.m. over the weekend.

Residents on Edge

Some local residents recounted hearing the gunshots that disrupted the usual tranquility of the neighborhood. One such resident, Steve Money, described the disturbing sounds, “It was like bop, bop, bop, bop” and mentioned that even though he had his headset on while playing games at home, the gunfire was loud enough to pierce through. Upon investigating the source of the noise, he was met with cries of distress, a heavy police presence, and the staggering revelation of a shooting, resulting in fear reverberating throughout the community.

Fear for Safety

In the aftermath of the incident, residents spoke out about their shaken sense of safety. “Not too safe anymore,” lamented resident Kimisha Smith. Sharing similar sentiments, Steve Money expressed shock, stating, “I didn’t know that was something that was possible here.” In light of the situation, some residents like Smith have been advocating for increased security measures, including more gates and patrol cars. She expressed hope that the recent incident would catalyze required actions and initiatives to prevent future breaches of safety.

Hope Amidst Fear

Despite the fearful atmosphere looming over the neighborhood, some residents are striving to maintain a sense of hope. Steve Money, despite the shock of the incident, maintains faith in the overall safety of his community. “Condolences to their family, I guess. I mean, that’s sad, but I mean, it doesn’t really change my aspect of the neighborhood myself. It’s just a one-time thing I guess,” he said, expressing his belief that this incident was an anomaly, not representative of the community as a whole.

Active Investigation

The Horry County Police Department continues its investigation, working tirelessly to bring closure to this case and provide reassurances to the concerned residents. Details on the condition of the person critically injured in the incident have yet to be disclosed. Any individual with information related to the incident is urged to come forward and contact the authorities at 843.915.8477.
