The whole situation came to light when a parent named David Warner stumbled upon the link after being alerted by others about similar issues cropping up in different counties. “Whenever I clicked on the website and it took me to where it went, I was really surprised,” Warner shared, expressing just how shocking this find was.
The link directed readers to a sexually explicit dating site right at the end of the “about the author” section. Warner noted, “When you clicked on it, it took us directly to a website that was obviously very inappropriate for children.” Talk about a major oversight!
What Does the School District Say?
The Horry County School District has jumped into action. A spokesperson explained that the author, Wendelin Van Draanen, originally included the link for readers to connect with one of her websites. However, after the school acquired the book in May 2024, another company took over the author’s site and redirected all traffic to that adult site. Yikes!
In response, the school district has promptly removed any trace of this URL from all copies of the book. They’ve even blacked out the link in the hard copies and ensured it’s blocked in online versions accessible through the school server. Parents can still check out the book, but at least the link is no longer an issue!

Despite the swift action taken by the district, some parents feel that more needs to be done. “Somebody should be held accountable for changing that website, and I don’t believe there’s any way that whoever did it didn’t know that it came from a book,” Warner insisted, shedding light on the need for responsibility in these situations.
