Potential for Strong Storms Today in Myrtle Beach

Weather Forecast for Sunday, August 18, 2024

The city of Myrtle Beach begins the day with warm and muggy conditions. Temperatures along the coastal areas fell to 75 – 80 degrees overnight, with inland areas dropping to the mid to low 70s. Participants of the early morning beach activities are greeted with mostly sunny skies. However, as the day progresses, a few clouds are expected to make their appearance.

The forecast for today predicts partly cloudy skies with temperatures topping out in the low 90s. The warm and humid conditions could lead to a few pop-up storms, particularly along the coastal sections, beginning early this afternoon.

The Main Event: Anticipated Arrival of a Strong Cold Front

The main event, however, will be the arrival of a strong cold front that is expected to move through most of the area tonight. This front is expected to bring an organized line of storms that could produce damaging winds, torrential rainfall, and vivid lightning. These weather conditions are anticipated to hit the Pee Dee region first, before continuing to move east and south, reaching the Grand Stand by nightfall.

What to Expect on Monday

Heading into Monday, the storm threat is expected to diminish across the Pee Dee, as most of the force will be concentrated along the stalled front near the coast. Coastal areas could see pop-up showers and storms through the afternoon and evening hours along the Grand Strand, with highs expected in the low 90s inland, and upper 80s along the coast.

Weather Outlook for Rest of the Week

From Tuesday through the rest of the week, a distinct change in the weather is predicted. Temperatures are expected to warm only into the low to mid-80s area-wide. Much drier air is anticipated to move into the area, which will help reduce both humidity and the chance for afternoon storms, offering a respite for those battling river flooding in some locations.

Highs will be in the low to mid 80s for both Pee Dee and coastal areas, while lows are likely to fall into the 60s inland, and hover around 70 at the coast, offering a hint of the fall to come.
