Myrtle Beach State Park kicks off the new year with its beloved First Day Hikes, inviting residents and visitors to reconnect with nature. Led by park ranger Ann Wilson, the hikes promote well-being through outdoor exploration. In addition, new parking reservations will be implemented this summer to enhance visitor experience. The park aims to improve accessibility while maintaining the joy of outdoor adventures on the Grand Strand.
As the new year dawned, the beautiful city of Myrtle Beach saw local residents ring in 2025 with a healthy dose of fresh air. Myrtle Beach State Park proudly played host to its annual First Day Hikes, inviting everyone to step into nature and embrace the tranquility that comes along with it. Each January 1, locals and newcomers alike take to the trails, and this year was no different—hikers started the year with a renewed sense of purpose.
The guided hikes led by park ranger Ann Wilson have become a beloved tradition, drawing in nature lovers eager to soak up the scenery. Wilson, who has been leading these hikes for over a decade, describes them as a fantastic way to kick off the new year. Participants can expect to find peace within the park’s expansive trails, which provide an escape into a sanctuary filled with lush wildlife and stunning landscapes.
Exploring the park helps people reconnect and rejuvenate. Research suggests that spending time outdoors can have therapeutic benefits, as it reduces heart rates, lowers blood pressure, and decreases cortisol levels. Ann Wilson encourages everyone to embrace the healing power of nature. She has a playful analogy for this, comparing nature to a form of medicine that everyone should take daily.
The First Day Hikes have become such a hit that South Carolina State Parks will be rolling out hikes on the first of every month at select parks throughout the state. The upcoming hikes in February and March will showcase the beautiful Sculpted Nature Trail and the scenic beach at Myrtle Beach State Park. This initiative aims to promote healthy habits by integrating fun with exercise while exploring the breathtaking Maritime forest and sandy shores.
For those looking to join the hiking adventure, the hikes are scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Participants are encouraged to meet at the park’s Nature Center and to dress appropriately for the weather and wear closed-toed shoes. Let’s face it; a little planning goes a long way toward ensuring a great experience in the wild.
Another exciting development for Myrtle Beach this summer is the upcoming changes to parking. Starting May 16, Myrtle Beach and Huntington Beach State Parks will implement a reservation system. To better manage parking during the crowded summer days, 20% of parking spots will be reserved. Visitors can reserve parking online for just $5 between 6 a.m. and noon. After noon, remaining spots will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. This reservation system will run until Labor Day.
While many experts believe these changes will benefit the parks, some residents are voicing concerns. For annual pass holders, the additional fee for parking reservations has raised eyebrows, leading some to feel the costs might be unfair for frequent visitors. On the flip side, some tourists are thrilled about the new system, believing it will enhance their park-going experience even during peak times.
Myrtle Beach State Park offers a total of 146 reservable parking spaces, while Huntington Beach State Park will feature 81. Reservations can be made up to one month in advance, and cancellations can be refunded if done at least four days prior to the reservation date. All in all, these new measures aim to improve customer service while keeping the parks accessible to everyone.
So, lace up those hiking boots, grab your family and friends, and embrace the great outdoors. Whether it’s a hike or a beach day, there’s no better way to welcome the new year than by enjoying some of the most beautiful spots on the Grand Strand!
