Children enjoy the rare snow in Myrtle Beach, creating snowmen and having snowball fights.
Myrtle Beach has been transformed into a winter wonderland as a historic snowstorm brings 5 inches of snow, the most in 25 years. While many locals delighted in the rare sight, travel conditions were significantly impacted, leading to school closures and flight delays. The region has recorded its fifth snowiest event since 1940, with residents taking to social media to share their experiences of this uncommon beauty amidst southern charm.
Here we go, Myrtle Beach! The city has just experienced a historic winter storm, delivering a stunning 5 inches of snow for the first time in 25 years! Yes, you heard that right—snow in Myrtle Beach is not something we see every day, and local residents were treated to a magical winter scene.
This January 2025 winter storm is now recorded as the fifth snowiest event in Myrtle Beach since 1940. This is a big deal, considering the area has experienced only 35 recorded snowstorms in that time. To put things in perspective, only 11 of those storms brought at least 3 inches of snow!
Surrounding areas were not left out of the snow fun. Residents in places like Carolina Forest, Loris, and Longs saw up to 6 inches, while folks in Aynor, Conway, and Socastee received about 5.5 inches. Even Surfside Beach joined the party with a respectable 3.5 inches of snow!
While the winter wonderland brought joy to many, it also posed its fair share of challenges. The snow created difficult travel conditions on roads, leading to urgent travel warnings. The city of Myrtle Beach unfortunately lacks the necessary equipment to clear snow, so local authorities were quick to assess the situation for potential snow removal. Horry County crews might have their hands full!
Horry County Schools were among the first to react, closing for the day of the storm and scheduling an eLearning day for Thursday. Even local government offices, parks, and recreation centers closed their doors as the snow blanketed the area.
The winter weather did not spare Myrtle Beach International Airport either, with several flight cancellations and delays disrupting travel plans. It looks like many were either stuck in the skies or had to navigate the tricky roads back home.
