Myrtle Beach Blanketed in Snow: A Winter Wonderland Unexpectedly Arrives!

While beautiful, the icy roads pose safety concerns, leading to temporary school closures and delayed government operations. Residents are advised to stay cautious as the area adapts to this unusual winter weather.

Myrtle Beach Blanketed in Snow: A Winter Wonderland Unexpectedly Arrives!

Well, well, well! It appears Mother Nature paid a surprise visit to Myrtle Beach this past January 21 and 22, 2025, delivering a gusty blast of winter that took many by surprise. The winter storm left the area shaking its head in disbelief as snowflakes fluttered down like they were auditioning for a holiday movie. This was no ordinary snowfall; Myrtle Beach recorded its largest accumulation since the unforgettable Christmas Day of 1989, totaling a remarkable 4.5 inches of snow!

A Snowy Tale Across Horry County

But wait, there’s more to this frosty tale! The snow didn’t just stop at Myrtle Beach; it spread its magical touch all across Horry County. Reports confirmed snowfall amounts ranging from 4 to 6 inches in various locations. Here are some specifics:

  • Conway: 6 inches
  • Loris: 6 inches
  • North Myrtle Beach: 5.5 inches
  • Briarcliffe Acres: 5.5 inches
  • Socastee: 5 inches in two spots
  • Little River: 4.9 inches
  • Forestbrook: 4.5 inches
  • Georgetown: Reports ranged from 4.5 to 4 inches
  • Surfside Beach: The lightest snowfall at 3.5 inches

Can you believe this was just one of only 35 snowstorms recorded in Myrtle Beach since 1940? That’s right! Out of those, only 11 storms had the honor of dropping at least 3 inches of snow. Talk about rare!

Caution: Icy Roads Ahead

As lovely as the snow looks, it doesn’t come without its challenges. Roads throughout Horry County have become icy and treacherous, thanks to the melting and then refreezing of the snow, with temperatures plunging to around 20 degrees on January 23, 2025. Officials have been proactive, warning residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. It’s better to be safe than sorry, right?

Horry County road crews have been working hard assessing and treating the icy mess, though both secondary and primary roads are struggling under the weight of ice. If you have to venture out, take it slow and keep your eyes peeled for lurking black ice, especially with water runoff poised to refreeze overnight.

Schools and Government Operations Adjust

In light of the icy conditions, Horry County Schools have announced an eLearning Day for January 24, 2025. In-person classes are expected to resume on January 27, 2025, giving everyone a little extra time to enjoy the snowy scenery from home!

As for the administrative side of things, Horry County Government offices will reopen by noon on January 24, following anticipated overnight refreezing. In a similar fashion, the City of Myrtle Beach and facilities in Conway will take a cautionary approach, also delaying their openings until noon on the same day.

Not to worry! Garbage collection is set to resume for those who missed their pickups during the storm, and residents are encouraged to report any water pipe ruptures in the meantime. And if you’re in North Myrtle Beach, you can expect all operations to resume by noon as well—just be extra careful out there!
