The attack took the life of a teenager visiting from Virginia, leaving a community in shock and searching for answers.
The Myrtle Beach Police Department announced over the weekend the arrest of an 18-year-old individual, Gary Abraham of Aiken, South Carolina. He has been charged with murder, three counts of attempted murder, and possession of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime. The charges are connected to the tragic death of Jakolbi Taylor, a 16-year-old basketball enthusiast from Virginia who was in Myrtle Beach for an AAU basketball tournament.
According to the arrest warrants, on July 20th, Abraham met Taylor and the group accompanying him at 16th Avenue North beach access. The documents further detail that Abraham beckoned the group to follow him down to the beach. This is when, it’s alleged, Abraham removed his backpack and started firing, hitting Taylor multiple times and inflicting fatal injuries. The moment when Abraham reportedly discarded his backpack was captured on camera.
Alongside the video evidence, witnesses identified Abraham as the shooter, with it noted that “known associates who were present at the time of the incident” also confirmed his identity. It was further revealed that Abraham was known to habitually carry a firearm in his backpack. A separate eyewitness stated that the shooter wore the same clothes as Abraham.
Abraham, taken into custody on Saturday, appeared in court for a bond hearing on Sunday. However, it fell to a circuit court judge to set bail, with the municipal court judge unable to do so. Although the bond hearing in circuit court is yet to be scheduled, Abraham is due to make an initial appearance in Conway on September 20.
Documents acquired by the HERE News Network reveal that multiple individuals were seen fleeing from the scene of the crime. It remains unclear whether there are additional suspects or persons of interest in this case. As investigations continue, the Taylor family issued a statement following the news of Abraham’s arrest, demanding justice and insisting that multiple culprits were involved in their son’s untimely demise.
The family holds firm that their search for justice will not end until every individual involved in the incident is apprehended and held accountable. They beseech any members of the community with further information to come forward to support the ongoing investigation.
The surrounding community has been rocked by this incident, reflecting on the tragic loss of a bright young life. Further details about what transpired are yet to be made available. The tragic death of Jakolbi Taylor serves as a stern reminder of the urgent need to tackle gun violence in communities across the U.S.
Our deepest sympathies extend to the family and friends of Jakolbi Taylor during this difficult time. Stay with HERE News Network for further updates on this developing story.
