Welcome to Myrtle Beach: Brace for Severe Thunderstorms!

Hey, Myrtle Beach! If you thought today was going to be all about sunshine and beach vibes, think again. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington, NC has just issued a thunderstorm warning that you need to know about. As of 12:53 p.m. on Monday, the warning is officially in effect until 1:15 p.m. So, let’s talk about what this means for you, your family, and your plans today!

What’s Coming Our Way

So, what are we up against? These storms are packing a punch and could bring some marble-sized hail—that’s right, about 0.5 inches of hail—and wind gusts that could reach up to 40 mph. Sounds like it’s time to batten down the hatches! The radar has already tracked a nasty thunderstorm over the Barefoot Landing Area of North Myrtle Beach, right near the North Myrtle Beach Airport. The storm is currently moving east at a brisk 25 mph.

Which Areas Are Affected?

If you’re in or around the following areas, you might want to stay alert:

  • Briarcliffe Acres
  • Atlantic Beach
  • Grand Strand Regional Medical Center
  • North Myrtle Beach Airport
  • Barefoot Landing Area of North Myrtle Beach
  • Nixonville
  • Hand
  • North Myrtle Beach
  • Myrtle Beach

Safety First!

The NWS has some stern advice: If you’re outdoors when these storms strike, seek shelter inside a building. Remember, lightning is a big deal, striking about 25 million times across the U.S. each year. It spikes during summer thunderstorms, leading to about 20 fatalities annually!

If you find yourself in a vehicle during the storm, be cautious. Hydroplaning can happen when your tires lose grip on the road due to water buildup. This causes your vehicle to slide uncontrollably. Remember these conditions can lead to dangerous situations:

  • Water pressure lifting tires off the road
  • Aquaplaning when tires skim over standing water
  • Loss of control resulting from rapid rainfall

More Thunderstorms on the Horizon

5:19 p.m. on the same day, signaling more severe thunderstorms until 6 p.m. for both Myrtle Beach and Northern Horry. The forecast suggests gusty winds again hitting up to 40 mph, with the storm moving northeast at lightning speed, around 50 mph. Keep an eye out for torrential rainfall that may cause localized flooding. It’s best not to attempt to drive through any flooded roads!

A Heads Up for Tornado Risks

We’re also getting news that there is a low chance of isolated tornadoes, though some tornado warnings near Charlotte were reported earlier today. Stay tuned in case anything changes! As the day goes on, storms are predicted to impact the Pee Dee area around 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM and the Grand Strand around 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. These storms are expected to blow offshore, so hang tight.
