Hey Myrtle Beach, have you been hearing the chatter around town regarding the new Road Improvement and Development Effort, or RIDE IV? It’s definitely a hot topic lately, with folks expressing a mixed bag of feelings — from worry to relief! So, let’s break it down.
RIDE IV is a big deal for Horry County as it rolls out a 25-year sales tax set to be a one percent increase. That’s something residents are still wrapping their heads around, especially those of us who are used to the shorter, eight-year capital sales taxes. It’s understandable to feel a bit overwhelmed with this extended commitment. After all, that’s a long stretch!
Now, the county is trying hard to keep residents informed and ease our minds about some of the more significant projects tied to this initiative. They’ve reassured us that they are taking steps to mitigate wetland impacts and tackle traffic concerns head-on. We know how much the traffic can impact our day-to-day lives, especially during the busy tourist season!
One major project that’s causing a stir is the SC Highway 22 extension. There are ten proposed routes that would connect Aynor to the Murrells Inlet area, and guess what? Some of these routes cross over wetlands, wildlife refuges, and even the beautiful Waccamaw River. It’s no wonder why some residents are a bit anxious about how all of this will play out.
Another sticking point for residents has been the lengthy wording of the RIDE IV ballot question, which is over a whopping 1,500 words! Many folks feel that this could be a lot to digest, particularly for those who may not be totally Familiar with all the details. It can be tough to sift through all that legal jargon, right?
Some community members are really keen to engage further on this matter, especially considering how it might affect our lovely areas. The Horry County Council did approve the wording for the ballot question as it stands currently. To make things clear, they mentioned that certain major projects, like the development of I-73, will not receive any funding unless there is support from both state and federal levels.
As we gear up for the upcoming votes, it’s essential that we keep the conversation going. Keep in mind, residents have voiced concerns that were met with silence when a local news outlet reached out to the county’s spokesperson for a comment. Perhaps it’s time to reach out ourselves or attend public meetings to make sure our voices are heard! After all, we live here, and it’s our future at stake.
In the end, Myrtle Beach, changes in our community can be daunting but also exciting! With every development, there are challenges and opportunities. Let’s keep our discussions open and constructive, ensuring that everyone feels included in the conversation about RIDE IV. We got this, Myrtle Beach!
