Big Transformation Planned for Former Helicopter Tour Site in Myrtle Beach

Big Changes Coming to Myrtle Beach Property!

It’s an exciting time in Myrtle Beach as some big changes are in the works for a piece of land that’s been a bit of a hot topic lately. A 3.76-acre site on 21st Ave. N, which used to be home to a helicopter tour company, is gearing up to be transformed! Yes, you heard that right!

Goodbye Helicopter Adventures

You may remember the good times spent buzzing around the skies with Helicopter Adventures, which was popular in our area since 2012. Sadly, the company had to pack their bags earlier this year when Horry County decided it was time for helicopter tourism companies to operate only from public airports. They were given a chance to relocate, but the deadline came and went, and it looks like that chapter has closed for good.

Making Way for New Possibilities

Now, here’s the juicy part! The property’s owner, Burroughs & Chapin, has asked the city for a big change. They’re looking to have the land annexed into Myrtle Beach and re-zoned for light manufacturing. What does that mean for us? Well, it opens the door for new businesses and opportunities to come to the area. So, get ready to see some innovative new ventures sprouting up!

City Planning Commission Takes Action

This past Tuesday was a big day for the city’s planning commission. They took a recommendation step towards approving this re-zoning request. Now it’s up to the Myrtle Beach City Council to decide if this idea takes off! Will they give the green light for new adventures? We can only hope so!

A Quick Look Back

If you didn’t know, back in 2016, Horry County introduced an ordinance that set the stage for the closure of non-conforming businesses like Helicopter Adventures. They were granted a grandfather clause, which was basically an extension to operate as usual until the start of this year. Unfortunately, with the lease ending around August 2023, there was no other option left.

And let’s not forget the little drama that unfolded: county leaders even sued Freddie Rick, the owner of Helicopter Adventures, for trying to keep the business running outside the rules! Thankfully, that legal mess was put to rest, but it just shows how much effort went into shaping the future of the area.

What’s Next?

So now we wait and see what the city council will decide. If everything goes as planned, we could see some exciting changes happening in the coming months. The idea of moving towards light manufacturing brings hope for new jobs and businesses, giving our community a boost that everyone could use!

In the meantime, Myrtle Beach locals can keep their fingers crossed for a bright future. It’s all about finding the right balance between our gorgeous beach vibes and some thriving new enterprises. What’s your take on the new changes? Are you excited to see what’s coming next?
