The Myrtle Beach City Council is currently considering a new landmark that could change the face of our oceanfront! During a recent workshop held on November 12, 2024, planners laid out their vision for a proposed planned unit development (PUD) that promises to bring a fresh touch to our beloved beach area.
The new project, which would be known as the Ocean 23, is set to replace the existing Boardwalk Beach Resort and several nearby parcels. How’s this for a guest experience? The hotel will feature a whopping 227 units, rising to a significant height of 251 feet! That’s not just a building; that’s a whole new sky-high destination. Imagine taking a dip in the pool on the ground level, or hanging out in a cool space designed just for the kiddos. There’s even a fitness area for those who want to stay active while on vacation!
For many, a perfect vacation isn’t complete without a stunning view. And Ocean 23 is here to deliver! The proposed design also includes a fabulous rooftop penthouse lounge, complete with a 520 square feet pool and a bar—talk about unwinding in style. Just think about sipping a refreshing drink while overlooking the breathtaking ocean vista!
So, where exactly will this swanky new hotel call home? The property is situated along 23rd Avenue North, right next to its sister property, the Hilton Grand Vacations Ocean 22 at 2200 North Ocean Blvd. Talk about a winning location—it doesn’t get much better than this for a beach getaway!
For anyone curious about the behind-the-scenes details, let’s dive into the data. Horry County Land Records reveal that a limited liability corporation named SCG 2300 LLC purchased multiple parcels of land in July 2024. The total selling price for these plots? A jaw-dropping $12 million! However, it’s not quite clear if that amount was for each parcel individually or for the whole package. This corporation has connections to a larger development firm in the Grand Strand, adding a layer of credibility to the project.
Curiosity piqued? The registered agent for SCG 2300 LLC is J. Patrick Lowe, who is also a founding member of Strand Capital, a well-known developer in the area. This firm is no stranger to the Myrtle Beach resort scene and has previously worked on several popular projects, including the Atlantic Breeze Ocean Resort and the Margaritaville of Myrtle Beach hotel. While we were eager to get a comment from Lowe about this new venture, it seems he was unavailable before publication. Perhaps he is too busy envisioning the future!
Now that’s all fine and dandy, but it’s not official just yet. The Ocean 23 project still needs a final green light from the Myrtle Beach city officials. City Manager Jonathan “Fox” Simons mentioned during the meeting that they are looking at potentially bringing the PUD proposal back to the council for a second reading on December 10, 2024.
