The sun-soaked sands of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina are not just for sunbathing anymore! If you’re a golf enthusiast, get ready to tee off in style as several top golf courses in the area undergo impressive upgrades without shutting their doors. Yes, you heard that right! Courses like Tidewater, Prestwick, Myrtlewood, Brunswick Plantation, and Legends Resort are all in the mix, making this the perfect time for a golfing getaway.
First on the list is the PineHills Course at Myrtlewood Golf Club, which just underwent a significant overhaul of its bunkers. This renovation, overseen by course architect Dan Schlegel, has revamped every bunker, improving both style and functionality. Gone are the days of battling poor bunker conditions. Now, this legendary course is not only equipped with a new Capillary concrete system for better drainage but looks fantastic too!
“We had such a good experience with him on the Palmetto,” said Steve Mays, president of Founders Group International, regarding Schlegel’s work. Now golfers can better see the bunkers from the tee, meaning it’ll not only be visually appealing but more challenging, especially on the redesigned 16th hole.
Over at Tidewater Golf Club, there’s even more excitement in the air. The team took over operations last August and asked both staff and guests what improvements they wanted. Their response? A full bunker makeover! Chris Cooper, the general manager, is keen to improve course playability for everyone. Starting mid-November, the course will undergo renovations one hole at a time, keeping things open for golfers to enjoy.
In total, about one-third of the bunkers—mostly those not serving any real purpose—will be removed. The changes aim to make the course less tricky and more enjoyable for everyone. Aiming to finish by mid-February, Cooper notes, “It’s going to make it much more playable for the guest.”
Meanwhile, Brunswick Plantation, which has 27 holes to play with, recently gave its clubhouse a facelift too. Directors decided that instead of having two separate eateries that might confuse diners, they’d focus on building a bustling Champions Grill. The old Hickory Shaft restaurant was closed, and its best features have been shifted to the new space.
Moreover, the course has eliminated about 10-15% of its bunkers while improving drainage and aesthetics. “We reshaped a lot of the bunkers to make it a little less penal and a lot more appealing,” explained Brett Thomaswick, Director of Golf at Brunswick Plantation.
Not wanting to be left behind, Prestwick Country Club jumped on board too! They recently closed their front nine for essential bulkhead repairs while offering discounted rates for back-nine players. Rest assured, this isn’t a one-time event, as upgrades will continue throughout the year.
And let’s not forget about Legends Resort, which spiffed up cart paths across four of its five courses. It seems like the whole area is buzzing with anticipation for these improvements, which will help elevate the golfing experience to new heights!
In recent years, Myrtle Beach has seen fewer new golf courses opening up. This means that renovations like these become even more vital for keeping the golfing experience fresh and exciting. As Steve Mays points out, “It’s good stuff that everyone is going out and renovating golf courses. The destination needs it.”
If you’ve been craving that next golfing adventure, look no further! Grab your clubs and prepare to hit these elite courses, all decked out in their brand-new glory, where every swing counts and every hole is a chance to create memories. Golf lovers, mark your calendars—the refreshed greens of Myrtle Beach await!
