Golf course under renovation in Myrtle Beach

News Summary

Myrtle Beach is set for significant golf club renovations at Whispering Pines and Tidewater Golf Clubs. With fresh grass types and player-focused upgrades, the ‘Golf Capital of the World’ aims to enhance the golfer’s experience. Both clubs are revamping to improve playability while maintaining charm, welcoming all levels from beginners to pros. Exciting improvements are also occurring at other local courses, solidifying Myrtle Beach’s status as a premier golfing destination.

Big Changes Coming to Myrtle Beach Golf Clubs!

Myrtle Beach is buzzing with excitement as two beloved golf clubs, Whispering Pines Golf Club and Tidewater Golf Club, gear up for some amazing renovations! This coastal city, known as the “Golf Capital of the World”, is ensuring that golfers have the best experience possible.

Whispering Pines Golf Club: A Fresh New Look

First up, we have Whispering Pines Golf Club, a course with a rich history, being formerly a part of a U.S. Air Force Base. Managed by Atlantic Golf Management and owned by the city, this golf club is ready for a makeover. After the last putt on May 23, the course will close its doors temporarily to let the magic happen. The exciting renovations are set to be completed by September 1, just in time for the fall golf season.

So, what can golfers expect? For starters, the course will undergo regrassing of tees, greens, and fairways! That means you can look forward to a more luscious and enjoyable playing experience. The greens will be transformed with Sunday ultradwarf Bermudagrass, offering a smooth putting surface that golfers are sure to love. Meanwhile, tees and fairways will be revamped using a newer strain called Bimini Bermuda grass. This grass is not just pretty to look at; it’s drought-tolerant and more durable than the common 419 Bermuda currently used elsewhere in the Grand Strand.

And here’s fun fact: the Bimini grass is growing right now at a turf farm in Camden, so it will be ready to go when the renovations start!

Tidewater Golf Club: Classic Meets Contemporary

Over in North Myrtle Beach, Tidewater Golf Club is also getting a facelift. This course is well-known and previously ranked among the top 100 public courses in the U.S. Its recent change in ownership to KemperSports in August 2023 has already inspired a fresh new approach to the game here.

The upgrades at Tidewater are all about enhancing the player experience. The renovations include reshaping existing bunkers — and they’ve already completed work on seven holes! Soon, additional sod will be added to these refreshed holes by mid-December 2024. But don’t worry, golfers! Tidewater will remain open throughout the process, with only one hole closed at a time for the much-anticipated improvements.

What’s Next for Myrtle Beach Golf?

The anticipated costs for these enhancements are certainly on the higher side, running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. While the exact figures have not been disclosed, what is clear is that both clubs are committed to improving playability while maintaining their classic charm. This is a shift from previous trends where courses focused on making play more challenging; now, the aim is to create a friendly experience for all golfers, from beginners to seasoned pros.

The excitement doesn’t end there! Other golf courses in Myrtle Beach, like the Sea Trail Golf Resort, are also rolling out their renovation plans to enhance guest experiences further. They are revitalizing their amenities, serving up three championship golf courses and even planning for a new hotel and residential units. Talk about raising the bar for golfers everywhere!

With 90 golf courses and a surge in tourism, Myrtle Beach is working hard to remain a top-notch golfing destination. So whether you’re a local or planning a visit, you might want to get your clubs ready for an enriched golfing experience like never before!
