News Summary

Myrtle Beach National Golf Club will begin renovations on the King’s North Course on May 26, closing the back nine for updates until September 1. The renovations are the first since 1995-96, focusing on enhancing playability and landscaping, including an upgrade to the greens. The Founders Group International is leading this effort and plans additional clubhouse renovations by the end of 2025. Golfers can still enjoy the front nine during this time, making Myrtle Beach an appealing destination for golf enthusiasts.

Renovation Plans Announced for King’s North Course at Myrtle Beach National Golf Club

Big news for golf lovers in Myrtle Beach! The resort town is gearing up for an exciting renovation at the King’s North Course located at Myrtle Beach National Golf Club. Mark your calendars for May 26, as that’s when the back nine of this stunning, Arnold Palmer-designed course will close for a makeover. The course is expected to reopen on September 1, just in time for the fall golfing season!

What’s Happening?

The front nine, which underwent its own upgrades just last summer, will remain open for play while the back nine is being reimagined. This means golfers can still enjoy the lush greens and the fabulous layout while the renovation takes place behind the scenes.

The renovation is a big deal because it’s the first significant overhaul since 1995-96. The main goal is to create more open spaces, improve the visibility of the bunkers, and enhance the overall playability of the course. With many golfers playing this iconic course, the updates are sure to please.

Meet the Team

Brandon Johnson, who previously served as the lead architect at Arnold Palmer Design Company, will be leading this renovation project. He’s already familiar with the course, thanks to his previous work on the front nine, and is excited to build on that with these new changes.

Game-Changing Updates

One of the most exciting changes includes an upgrade to the greens. The greens will transition from Champion ultradwarf Bermudagrass to the even more efficient TifEagle ultradwarf Bermuda, plus they’ll be getting larger too! This means a better experience for players navigating those challenging putting surfaces.

Speaking of challenges, let’s talk about the par-4 18th hole. Currently filled with a whopping 41 bunkers, this hole is set for a major redesign to reduce the number of hazards. Golfers may soon find that navigating this hole is a bit less daunting! On holes 14 and 15, you’ll also see some dramatic waste bunkers being added, along with modifications around the 10th tee that will also become a waste area.

And if you’re one to enjoy the edge-of-your-seat moments, wait until you hear about the beach bunkers on holes 16 and 17! These are being revamped, as they border tricky water hazards. As for hole 13, there might be a slight tweak in the tee box location, moving it back by as much as 20 yards to make that sharp dogleg left a little more strategic for players.

Meanwhile, the straightforward par-5 10th hole is also getting some love. It will soon feature an added fairway bunker and a greenside bunker, challenging golfers to think strategically as they approach the green.

Future Plans

It’s worth noting that the Founders Group International, which operates Myrtle Beach National along with 21 other courses, is enthusiastic about making this renovation a success. They’re even allowing for flexibility, so changes can be made mid-project if necessary.

But that’s not all! The renovation buzz doesn’t stop at the golf course. Founders Group International is planning a major renovation of the Myrtle Beach National clubhouse, aiming to be completed by the end of 2025. Built in 1971, this beloved clubhouse will maintain its dining area, but upgrades will allow for enhanced food and drink options, including a grab-and-go section for quick player convenience. A similar renovation is also happening at the River Club in Pawleys Island, including a complete kitchen overhaul, yet it will remain open during updates.

So, whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just love the game, the upcoming changes at King’s North Course are bound to make Myrtle Beach an even more enticing destination for golf enthusiasts!
