Oh, Myrtle Beach! The sandy shores, the warm sun, and all the fun activities that keep us entertained throughout the year. But now, there’s some bittersweet news that will tug at the heartstrings of locals and visitors alike: the Funplex amusement park has officially closed its doors.
For those who may not know, Funplex opened way back in May 2021 on a cozy little 0.41 acre plot of land tucked away on Ocean Boulevard between 14th and 15th avenues. This small amusement park quickly became a favorite spot for families, friends, and thrill-seekers, offering rides that got the adrenaline pumping. From exhilarating free falls to that fun rotating “tower planes” ride, plus a unique roller coaster, it was a vibrant spot where countless smiles were shared.
But all good things seem to come to an early end, don’t they? After just over three years, Funplex’s Myrtle Beach location has announced that it is now closed, leaving many nostalgic for the thrilling memories made on those twists and turns!
Reflecting on the closure, the park’s website shared, “We are incredibly proud of the community we have built together and the countless smiles we have shared. It is with a heavy heart that we are leaving Myrtle Beach.” It’s clear they really held a deep connection to our coastal town and its residents — they’ll certainly be missed!
Although this news may leave you feeling a bit down, it’s worth noting that Funplex still has two other locations in New Jersey going strong. So, if you’re ever up that way, you can relive some of that Funplex magic!
A little trip down memory lane reveals that the land where Funplex now sits was purchased for a staggering $11.9 million back in 2019. That’s a hefty sum for just under half an acre, but it truly showcased the promise and potential of what was to come. The park opened with great fanfare, and for many, it breathed new life into the local amusement scene. It became a spot to celebrate birthdays, enjoy family outings, and even just hang out with friends after a long week of work under the sun!
Now, as we bid farewell to the park, let’s remember those sunny afternoons spent screaming with joy or maybe even a hint of terror on the rides. What’s better than grabbing a funnel cake while laughing with friends right before hopping onto another thrilling ride? If you visited Funplex, you surely have your fair share of stories and memories from those fun days!
While losing Funplex is a bummer, Myrtle Beach has always been a place that thrives on new beginnings. Who knows what could come next to that lovely little spot? Maybe another amusement park, or perhaps a new restaurant or entertainment venue that will sparkle in its place?
For now, let’s keep the good times going in our vibrant beach town. Whether it’s hitting the beach, walking the Boardwalk, or checking out the local attractions, there’s still plenty to enjoy here in Myrtle Beach.
So, here’s to the moments we cherished at Funplex, to the laughter and joy it brought us, and to what’s next on the horizon for our beloved city!
