Among the eclectic mix of films, one foreign gem stands out: “Vita Nova.” This eight-minute animated film hails from Ukrainian filmmaker Dmytro Zavora. Based on a short story set in post-World War II Germany, this beautifully crafted piece explores the emotional journey of a man purchasing poison with very little dialogue—focusing instead on powerful visuals to tell its story.
Zavora, an animation and VFX whiz with over 15 years of experience, has already garnered acclaim for “Vita Nova,” picking up awards for best animation at five different festivals, including one in Italy. The film tackles profound themes of grief, guilt, and hope—an endeavor that served as a personal healing project for the filmmaker amidst the harsh realities of war in Ukraine. Those keen to witness this poignant work can catch it during block 13 on Saturday, April 26, from 5-7 p.m..
The festival isn’t just limited to international films. It also features a heartwarming piece from Tennessee filmmaker Matt Webb titled “Dad’s Last Beach Trip.” This touching, 15-minute narrative follows a family as they navigate the trials of their father’s early onset Alzheimer’s, drawn from Webb’s real-life experiences. This story will be shown in block 12 on April 26 from 2:30-4:30 p.m.. Expect plenty of emotion as this film dives deep into familial love and challenges.
Mark your calendars for April 22, as the festival kicks off at 3 p.m. with an opening reception at the Grand 14 Theatre lobby. 🍾 Get that party vibe going with an exciting premiere night after-party at Tupelo Honey from 9:30-11 p.m. Enjoy mingling with filmmakers and cinephiles alike for a night packed with fun and networking!
And don’t forget, the festival will wrap up on a high note with an awards ceremony on Saturday, April 26, at 9:15 p.m., followed by another après-festival celebration in the Grand 14 Theatre lobby. Exciting days are ahead!
Tickets for individual film blocks are a wallet-friendly $15 until April 18, after which they will rise to $17. For those who can’t decide and want to soak in the entire festival, an all-access pass is available for just $99! Tickets can be purchased through the festival’s website or directly at the box office that opens at 3 p.m. on April 22.
