Hey, Myrtle Beach! It’s that exciting time of year again—yes, you guessed it, election season is upon us! Early voting kicked off last week in South Carolina, and it’s been buzzing with energy. Can you believe that so far, a whopping 125,913 South Carolinians have already voted early? Out of those, around 8,834 are from our very own Horry County!
If you’ve been to the polls lately, you know the lines can be a bit daunting. We chatted with some local voters at the Horry County Memorial Library in Carolina Forest, and many folks were super chill about the wait. They were ready to stand in line for however long it took, but that’s not the case for everyone. Take Bob Albright, for example. He tried to vote twice last week and went again on Monday for his third shot at it.
Bob described the waiting experience saying, “The line each day was long, at least as long as it is now!” But when he went for his third attempt, he was pleasantly surprised. “I waited about ten minutes this time, and the line was moving much quicker than before,” he said with a smile. Let’s be honest, we all know how unpredictable lines at the polls can be!
Bob isn’t the only one navigating these voting lines. Meet Olena Yamenko, a newcomer to the U.S. from Ukraine who’s casting her vote for the very first time. How exciting! She made her first voting attempt last Monday, hoping to dodge those long election day lines. Balancing her two young kids while voting? Yikes! That could be a tall order!
Olena shared her experience, saying, “I asked someone leaving about their wait time, and they had been there for about an hour and a half!” She managed to finish her voting in about 45 minutes, and she felt every second was worth it. For her, this election has significant meaning. “As a Ukrainian,” she said, “this election is life-changing for many reasons, so I figured my vote would matter even if it’s a tiny drop in the bucket.” Isn’t that inspiring?
With seven early voting sites sprinkled throughout Horry County, there are plenty of options for everyone. As we move closer to election day, experts are predicting record-breaking voting rates. And yes, that typically means longer lines. But hey, that just shows how engaged and invested folks are in shaping their future!
Don’t forget, early voting is set to run until November 2nd, so there’s still time to get your vote in if you haven’t already. If you’re unsure about where to go or if you’re registered, now’s the time to check those details, so you can make your voice heard without any hiccups.
As we navigate through this electoral adventure together, let’s keep supporting each other and stay positive. Whether you’re waiting in line or discussing the issues with friends, every vote counts—and that’s something to be proud of! Happy voting, Myrtle Beach!
