News Summary

Tami Elswick, assistant principal at Myrtle Beach Elementary School, has been recognized as the February Administrator of the Month by Hard Rock Cafe. Her dedication to special education and advocacy for students has made her a vital leader in the community. Over the years, Elswick has transformed the educational experience for countless children, proving her commitment through hands-on leadership and community involvement.

Myrtle Beach Celebrates Local Educational Leader

In the beautiful coastal city of Myrtle Beach, a shining star in educational leadership has been recognized for her incredible contributions to the community. Tami Elswick has been named the February Administrator of the Month by the iconic Hard Rock Cafe of Myrtle Beach, and it’s no surprise why! As the assistant principal at Myrtle Beach Elementary School (MBES), Elswick has shown unwavering dedication to her students and staff.

Leading with Heart

Tami Elswick has made quite a name for herself at MBES, where she oversees the special education program and ensures that every student, especially those with special needs, receives the support they need to thrive. With approximately 1,100 students in grades 3 to 5 and around 100 faculty and staff members, Elswick plays a pivotal role in creating a nurturing and effective learning environment.

A Journey Through Education

Originally from Maryland, Tami’s journey in education is both inspiring and unique. After moving to Akron, Ohio, she attended Miami University where she initially pursued a degree in education but later switched her focus to sociology and criminology. She went on to obtain a master’s degree in social work from the University of Cincinnati. Before returning to education, Tami spent ten years in her family’s mortgage business but found her true calling in teaching.

An Advocate for Students

Tami’s educational journey took a significant turn when she worked as a mental health counselor at Myrtle Beach Middle School. It was there that she rediscovered her passion for education, thanks to the guidance of her former employer, who encouraged her to become a special education educator. Tami completed the PACE program to earn her certification and quickly found a home at MBES, where she taught special education before stepping into her current role as assistant principal.

Community Involvement

For the 2024-25 school year, Elswick will be celebrating her fourth year as assistant principal, having transitioned to administration to take on new challenges that allow her to help children even more. She has a deep commitment to students facing behavioral challenges and high needs, demonstrating her genuine care for every child’s educational experience.

At MBES, the administrative team follows the motto, “Do what’s right for kids,” and Tami exemplifies this commitment through her daily interactions with both students and teachers. She is active in the Myrtle Beach community and prioritizes building relationships with students and their parents, ensuring that they feel cared for and supported throughout their educational journey.

A Balanced Life

Outside of school, Tami is a proud mother of three children—an 18-year-old daughter, a 21-year-old son, and a 23-year-old daughter, all of whom attended local schools. She values outdoor activities, finds joy in gardening, and loves to unwind by the fire with family during the winter months.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Throughout her career, Tami has been inspired by amazing mentors, including Natasha McDonald, the principal and current director of special education for Horry County Schools. Even as she reflects on her college experience and her decision to switch majors, she wishes she had remained focused on education. It is clear that Tami Elswick is dedicated to shaping the future for many young people and ensuring everyone at MBES finds joy in learning.

With her leadership skills and compassionate approach, Tami Elswick is not just an assistant principal; she is a beacon of hope and an advocate for children in the Myrtle Beach area, proving that when you lead with heart, success follows.
