Myrtle Beach Drought Update: The Dry Spell Continues

We’re starting to feel the pinch here in Myrtle Beach as October rolls on! If you’ve noticed it has been a bit drier lately, you’re not alone. In fact, we are officially experiencing the driest October on record! Since the beginning of the month, rainfall has been pretty scarce across the Grand Strand and Pee Dee regions.

Where Did All the Rain Go?

Since Hurricane Helene passed through, our local weather has taken a decidedly dry turn. October can often be a dry month for us, especially when we don’t have any tropical systems passing by to shake things up. Typically, October is pretty average in terms of rainfall—but this year, it’s a whole different story!

As of October 20, we’re not just talking about a little dry patch—Florence is experiencing its fourth driest October, and Lumberton isn’t far behind with the second driest month on record! With a pattern like this, we may want to stock up on some good ol’ fashioned water conservation tips!

The Weather Forecast Says… More Dryness

Glancing toward the horizon, it appears we’ve got a stretch of sunny skies ahead of us because there’s no measurable rain in sight through at least the beginning of next week. That’s right; hold onto your watering cans, folks, because it’s looking like a rain-free week ahead. So whether you’re hitting the beach or tending to your garden, you might want to keep those plans flexible!

A Little Drought Monitor Insight

For the weather enthusiasts out there, here’s a fun fact! Every Thursday, we get something called the drought monitor, which keeps an eye on our local conditions. They take readings up until Tuesday of each week, and guess what? With a new round of abnormally dry conditions creeping into parts of Pee Dee, more areas could be feeling the impact as we move further into the month. This may even include local favorites like the Border Belt and of course, our beloved Grand Strand!

With November just around the corner—a month that typically doesn’t bring much rainfall either—the dry conditions could spread further if we don’t see some much-needed rain soon. So, keep your fingers crossed for a good fall shower!
