Myrtle Beach Community Commemorates the 80th Anniversary of D-Day

Setting an example of unity, over 150 locals congregated on Thursday at the World War II Memorial for the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Normandy Invasion. The commemorative event was organized by Myrtle Beach’s Military Appreciation Committee along with the veteran community to pay tribute to the nearly 160,000 Allied troops who bravely landed on Omaha Beach in 1944.

Respectful Remembrance

Reflecting the solemnity and significance of this momentous occasion, the attendees exhibited immense respect for the sacrifices made during the world war. After laying down the ceremonial wreath, the Knights of Columbus conducted a deeply stirring 13-fold American Flag Ceremony.

Paying Tribute With Words and Song

The sacrifices of the men and women who bravely risked their lives were remembered with heartfelt expressions of gratitude. A member of the Veterans Organization of Cresswind, Paul Hickey, read a moving poem about the ceaseless courage of these selfless individuals. Guest speakers including Vietnam War veteran Bruce Lake, and committee members Chris Aranda and Carol Dion passionately spoke on the significance of this historical event.

To instill a sense of harmonious unity among all attendees and to conclude the event, Lori Coleman, a well-regarded local performer, led a heart-rending performance of “God Bless America”. In the words of the Myrtle Beach City Government, “We remember, and thank, our veterans and veteran families for their sacrifices.”

Bringing the Community Together

This event marking the 80th Anniversary of D-Day not only paid respect to the immense bravery of those involved in the world-altering event but also brought the Myrtle Beach community together. The shared experience of acknowledging the past, paying respect to the ninety-year-olds, and investing in preserving this vital piece of history for future generations was a powerful reminder of human courage and resilience.

Toddlers, teenagers, adults, and senior citizens- Myrtle Beach saw members from all age groups come together to honor these brave souls and their monumental mission to fight for the freedom we enjoy today.

Lessons From History

The commemoration event at Myrtle Beach was not only a tribute to the fallen heroes but also a valuable lesson for current and future generations. It serves as an important milestone in the history of humankind, a reminder of the devastation caused by war, and the importance of maintaining peace and harmony among nations.

History plays a crucial role in defining a country’s identity and values. Remembering such significant events of the past helps people appreciate the freedom they enjoy today and ensures that the sacrifices made by countless individuals do not fade away in the pages of history.
