Hey Myrtle Beach! As you know, we are known for our stunning coastline, warm weather, and vibrant community. But today, it’s not just about lounging on the beach or grabbing a cold one at our favorite brewery. Our heart is extending all the way to Asheville, North Carolina, also known as Beer City USA, where Hurricane Helene has left many in tough situations.
Local breweries from all across the Grand Strand are stepping up to lend a helping hand, showcasing a wonderful spirit of community and compassion. Five breweries, including Crooked Hammock Brewery, New South Brewing, Tidal Creek Brew House, Grand Strand Brewing Company, and Southern Hops in Murrells Inlet, are all banding together to collect essential items for those affected by Hurricane Helene.
For James “Jam” Mayfield, a bartender at Grand Strand Brewing Company, this cause hits especially close to home. Having lived in Asheville for 17 years, Mayfield is heartbroken to see the devastation that this hurricane has caused in the city he once called home. “This is something we’ve never seen before,” Mayfield said, clearly emotional. He added that even though his kids are safe, they are without power and water amidst the chaos of the storm’s aftermath.
Mayfield’s love for his previous home is palpable, as he shared the struggles of trying to communicate with family while everyone was under the hurricane’s spell, “There was a period of time where there was no communication whatsoever. I mean, we didn’t know what was going on,” he expressed.
There’s good news though! We can all help out. The breweries are acting as drop-off sites for essential items, inviting everyone to join in and donate what they can. Whether it’s water, diapers, or even dog food, every little bit counts. Clayton Burrous, owner of Grand Strand Brewing Company, mentioned, “We’re basically just serving as a drop site for essentials for people.”
So, if you’re out and about this week, swing by one of these breweries to drop off any supplies you can spare. It’s a small gesture that can mean a lot to those in desperate need right now. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to show why we love our community and how we come together in times of need.
The collection will be ongoing throughout the week, wrapping up on Friday when crews will deliver all the collected items to the Hurricane Helene Airlift Relief in Statesville, NC. From there, the donations will be distributed directly to those who need them the most. Let’s get together and make this happen, Myrtle Beach!
The effort reminds us all that no matter how far we may be from each other, we really are one big family here in the Carolinas. “It’s nice we come together in the brew world,” said Mayfield, and he’s absolutely right. In our little slice of paradise, we’ve got a big heart for each other, and for all those in need.
So, to my fellow beach lovers, let’s rally together this week! It’s a chance to give back, and it’s always a good time to show some love. Together, we can make a difference, one beer at a time!
