Myrtle Beach Faces Tropical Storm Conditions
Hey Myrtle Beach, it’s that time again! Grab your raincoats and hunker down because we’ve got a tropical storm warning in effect for our lovely coast. According to the National Weather Service, Tropical Cyclone Eight is brewing in the Atlantic off the shores of North and South Carolina and will bring some wild weather our way.
What’s Coming Our Way?
So, what can we expect? Well, the warning means we’re going to feel those tropical storm-force winds here in Surfside Beach, Myrtle Beach, and North Myrtle Beach through Monday evening. The storm is expected to pack a punch with winds ranging from 40 to 50 mph and gusts even hitting up to 60 mph. Plus, we’re looking at about 2 to 3 inches of rain hitting our area, so stay prepared!
As of now, the actual path of the storm is still a bit of a guessing game. Winds and rainfall totals may change depending on where it decides to make landfall. But one thing’s for sure, we’ll be feeling the effects here!
Cancelations All Around
With the storm looming, a bunch of cancelations are already in motion. For those with kiddos involved in local sports, prepare for a schedule shake-up as all youth sports games and practices are canceled for Monday evening. Don’t worry though; they’ll be back at it on Tuesday.
Also, if you’ve been planning a fishing trip, you’ll need to rethink your plans for today. The Surfside Beach Fishing Pier is closed due to the storm but is expected to reopen on Tuesday, September 17, 2024!
Taking Care of Our Furry Friends
Pet parents, listen up! The Horry County Animal Care Center is closed today as well, so make sure your pets are ready for any severe weather. The center is set to open again on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., so be sure to check back then if you need any services.
No Classes or Government Services
And for all the college folks out there, Coastal Carolina University has canceled classes today, and only essential personnel will be working. So, if you’re supposed to be catching up on those readings, you might want to turn off the alarm clock for today!
Regular government offices, including Horry County, will be closed as well. That includes all parks, libraries, and the solid waste authority centers. While landfill operations may begin on a limited basis this morning, these could change depending on conditions.
Airport Operations
For those of you planning to fly, Myrtle Beach International Airport is still open. Make sure to check in with your airlines to see if your flights are proceeding as planned.
School is in Session, Well, Kind Of!
In the meantime, Horry County Schools has switched to an e-learning day instead of in-person classes, so your kids can still keep up with their studies from the comfort of home. And don’t worry too much if they can’t log in or if the power goes out; there will be chances to get back on track later.
