Myrtle Beach Icon Betty Moses Celebrates 89th Birthday with Unmatched Spirit and Dedication

Myrtle Beach’s Wonder Woman: Betty Moses Turns 89 and Still Brings the Heat!

In the heart of Myrtle Beach, there’s a whirlwind of energy that refuses to slow down, and that whirlwind comes in the delightful form of Betty Moses. Just recently, Betty celebrated her 89th birthday, yet this sparkle-filled dynamo continues to rock the newsroom full-time at MyHorryNews, serving as the production manager for the Myrtle Beach Herald and Carolina Forest Chronicle.

A Family-Like Atmosphere

Every morning as she strolls into the office, it’s like a family reunion. Colleagues shower her with affection: “Good morning, Miss Betty!” “How was your weekend, Miss Betty?” “Can I help you with anything, Miss Betty?” Such greetings aren’t casual remarks; they hit home as if she’s a cherished family member, and indeed she is! As Moses settles in with her usual can-do attitude, she exudes warmth, friendship, and that infectious cheer everyone loves.

30 Years in the Business

Betty’s journey began back in 1996. Can you believe she thought she’d only handle office management? Little did she know, she would be glued to the hot glue and become an essential part of the newspaper production world! With a glint in her eye, she fondly remembers those early days, saying, “As soon as I got into the hot glue, I was hooked!”

Initially hired as an office manager, she prepared herself for billing and paperwork. Instead, she was handed opportunities to get her hands dirty with production tasks. Before long, she was laying out the entire paper! “It was a whirlwind of organizing obituaries, scanning photos, and even snapping pictures of future local businesses,” she recalled with a smile.

Burning the Midnight Oil

Many nights were spent working into the early hours to ensure everything was perfect. Remembering the late nights spent in the old Myrtle Square Mall, Betty chuckled, “I worked many nights by myself, which was a little creepy because, well, there were snakes!” Talk about dedication!

A Friend and a Mentor

Tom O’Dare, a fellow staff member and a long-time friend, has seen Betty’s growth firsthand. “When I first met her, I was intimidated for no reason at all,” he joked. “But soon I realized she’s an amazing person.” Their camaraderie continues to be a beautiful bond — a mix of work, laughter, and sweet memories.

Betty stands as a shining example of what a dedicated team player looks like. Hear it straight from Tom: “Betty is consistent and resilient. She’s been my role model, friend, and mentor since 2000!”

Adapting to Change

In this ever-evolving industry, Betty stays ahead of the game. Just last year, she dove headfirst into learning a new computer program, switching from Quark to Adobe InDesign. Within two weeks, not only did she learn it, but she also came to love it! Talk about taking the bull by the horns!

Becky Stevens, the production director at the company, explained, “For most people, adapting to a new program is daunting, but Betty faced the challenge head-on and nailed it!”

Creating a Family Culture

Betty has cultivated a culture of family at work that goes beyond just producing newspapers. She’s there to lend an ear, share a laugh, or simply brighten someone’s day. According to Hannah Oskin, the executive editor, “Betty represents loyalty and care. She has years of invaluable experience, and I look up to her daily!”

Life Advice That Resonates

When she isn’t laying out newspapers, £Betty inspires others with her glowing perspective on life. “If you have something to do, something you love, go for it! It keeps you young and happy!” she advises.

Betty in Action

Just a few weeks ago, she had a heartwarming moment when she held little Stella Oskin in her arms, a testament to the homey and loving atmosphere of the newsroom. “It felt like time stood still,” her co-workers reminisced, filled with joy at the sight.

Conclusion: The Legacy of Betty Moses

The passion Betty brings at 89 is nothing short of inspiring! Her journey is a reminder that age is merely a number, and it’s the spirit that truly counts. As she continues to serve as a beacon of wisdom, kindness, and determination, one thing is clear: It’s a beautiful day in Myrtle Beach, thanks to the incredible Betty Moses.
