The recent Beach Ball Classic, held from December 27 to December 29 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, showcased some thrilling talent and competition. Not only did it kick off the basketball festivities, but it also set the stage for what’s to come in region play!

Highlights from the Beach Ball Classic

One of the standout performers at the Beach Ball Classic was Myrtle Beach’s very own John Simmons. He really felt the heat as he faced tight defensive pressure throughout the tournament. But despite the challenges, his efforts were admirable, and fans eagerly await how he’ll fare as the season progresses.

On a high note, local star Julian Brown made history by winning the 2024 Beach Ball Classic Dunk Contest! This monumental win marks a first for a Myrtle Beach athlete and puts Brown in an elite company, joining past winners like basketball legends Kobe Bryant, Grant Hill, and Grayson Allen. Browning’s impressive dunk has certainly left a mark on the basketball community, proving exactly what Myrtle Beach can deliver on the court!

What’s Next for the Teams?

Not to be outdone, Atlantic Collegiate Academy’s boys are performing well, currently holding a record of 8-2 and looking to improve on their 1-1 region performance after winning the Pepsi Classic tournament over the break against the Class 4A Crestwood team.

Standout players from Atlantic Collegiate include seniors Jamie Brooks and Clayton Hemingway, both of whom are showing notable skills, averaging double-digit points per game. Meanwhile, Aynor and Loris high school teams are set to dive into their region battles starting January 5, 2024.

Aynor is making strides this season, already surpassing last year’s win total with a current record of 6-6. Junior Lucas Kamp is leading the way for Aynor with an average of 9.5 points per game. Loris has also been impressive, grabbing headlines with their victory in the Shootout by the Sea tournament. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Andrew Eads, they are seeing great performances from juniors Nigel Miller and Khalil Sherman.

The Beach Region Competition

The Beach Region is heating up with teams such as Carolina Forest, Conway, North Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach, Socastee, and St. James all vying for regional success. Coach Ryan Walker of North Myrtle Beach is feeling optimistic about his team’s growth and potential in the upcoming games. The North Myrtle Beach girls’ team is enjoying an undefeated start to their season, led by the talented senior Faith Farmer.
